Tinplate Design Show 2017

Prior to the winter break, Materials Engineering students presented their designs for the Tinplate Design Show to the Livery Company of the City of London: The Worshipful Company of Tinplate Workers, Alias Wire Workers and academic staff in the Department of Materials.

Materials Students Win Pirelli Student of the Year Awards

On August 4th 2017, Three Loughborough University students were named as winners in the annual Pirelli Student of the Year awards after impressing on placements with the company in 2016-17.

On 10th July, 39 students in years 10 - 12 from across the UK arrived at Loughborough University’s newest laboratory building – STEMLab, to begin a four day summer school in Biomaterials, in partnership with the Smallpeice Trust.

£3.2m funding for Midlands-based high performance computing centre

The Midlands Innovation group of universities and Queen Mary University of London have been awarded £3.2million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to establish HPC Midlands Plus – a centre of excellence in high performance computing (HPC).

WHISKERMIT - Materials department research reaches final of Enterprise Awards 2017 Tin whiskers present a significant threat to the reliability of electronics components ranging from mobile devices to satellites. The team have developed a method to prevent against the growth of these whiskers and have filed an associated patent application
