Monitoring Endangered Species through Analysis of Complex Sparse Big Data

Summary

This project aims to analyse complex sparse Big Data with respect to monitoring endangered species. A systems approach will be used to help focus the development of algorithms to extract behaviour patterns. There is a geospatial element to this project, which will also hope to include a time dimension (possibly over several decades or years). Various techniques to aid the visualisation of behaviours will be investigated and examples will be produced in due course that show the most promise in terms of understanding Big Data sets.

Aims and Objectives

The goal is to create the tools and techniques that can handle enourmous sparse data sets which have involved a variety of collection methods from gps tracking, observations and other means. The goal is to aid conservation scientists in a way that supports real-time interactive exploration to improve understanding of elephant migration across the seasons and their habitat.

Novel techniques for managing the sparce data will be developed in conjunction with special algorithms that allow analysis of migratory patterns.

Research

There are many strands to this research which is still in its early stages.

Results from the research will need to be approved by The Amboseli Trust for Elephants before they can be released. Please refer back.

Acknowledgements

The  project is immensly grateful to the ‌The Amboseli Trust for Elephants for their support and access to key data.
