PhD Opportunity | Real-time quality inspection for 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing

Project Description

Project Detail:
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to start in April 2017. Building on research performed within the topic area by the supervisory team (http://www.cassamobile.eu), the primary aim of this research will be to develop and validate a closed-loop 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing) inspection and quality control system. Historically the inspection of AM components has been performed upon the completion of their manufacture, thus potentially wasting resources. Therefore a range of exciting opportunities exist to advance the capabilities of 3D printing systems by providing real-time functionalities.

This research will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Xiaoxiao Han and Dr. Andrew Johnson. The successful candidate will also contribute to activities performed by two of Loughborough University’s world leading research groups - Additive Manufacturing Research Group and Design for Digital Fabrication Research Group.

Candidates must have a first or upper second class academic qualification, and ideally a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline to the topic area. Prior knowledge or expertise relating to the following areas would be highly advantageous: Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, LabVIEW programming, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design/Engineering, Quality Control etc.

Find out more:
Please note that all applications must be accompanied with an up-to-date CV and cover letter summarising why the applicant feels that they are appropriate for the post and a 500 word overview of quality control/in-process inspection within the field of Additive Manufacturing. A short presentation may be required at interview stage. Further information about the Loughborough Design School and Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering, can be found at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/, with information relating to the application process located at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/apply/research/

This project is funded partly by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of the Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) awarded to Loughborough University, and partly by the Design School of Loughborough University

Benefits of this DTP-studentship include:
 • A tax-free stipend of £14,296 per annum for 3.5 years
 • Tuition fees at the UK/EU rate
 • A Research Training Support Grant worth at least £1,750 to assist with training
 • Admission to the University as part of a cohort of EPSRC-DTP funded students

Due to funding restrictions, this is only available to those who are eligible to pay UK/EU fees. In order to qualify for a full award, all applicants must meet the EPSRC eligibility criteria including the minimum residency requirement https://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/eligibility/
