Global Buzz - January 2010
Global Buzz is an ‘immediate measure' of globalization: it indicates levels of global activity that are happening within selected cities over a given month. This short-term measure allows cities to be closely monitored over time. Results are produced for 62 cities in the form of % global buzz occurring in each city.
The first results were released for September 2009; here we release the results for January 2010
and the fourth set of monthly change results. There are two tables below that provide the detailed levels of Global Buzz and the monthly change.
Main points:
- The main result is that Singapore and Hong Kong have consolidated their top rankings leaving a large gap between them and the rest.
- Among the other top ten cities, Paris is the big riser in global buzz and Moscow is the big loser in global buzz reversing last month's rise.
- New York and London now take third and fourth place.
- The USA continues to have three other cities in the top ten: Los Angeles and Washington remain, and San Francisco replaces Boston.
- Dubai, after its large rises in the last two months, remains in the top ten but Abu Dhabi is now a major faller (from 24th to 37th).
- The large gainers of global buzz after Paris and San Francisco are outside the top ten but all Asian cities: Delhi, Jakarta, Shanghai, Mumbai and Tokyo rank 3rd to 7th.
- In terms of rankings, other important gainers are: Vancouver (35th to 21st), and Dallas (42nd to 33rd).
- And, of course, the big loser of global buzz is Copenhagen: after the Climate Change conference it falls from 11th to 39th.
