The Partnership

Speedo first partnered the Sports Technology Institute in 2000 through sponsorship of a PhD studentship to investigate advanced goggle design.

Based in Nottingham, Speedo’s partnership is further enhanced by close proximity to Loughborough’s large student body that it engages to gather data to inform new product development.

In 2009, Speedo commissioned Progressive Sports Technologies (an Institute spinout company), to help them break into the triathlon market with a product range inspired by its LZR Racer swim suit, worn by record breakers Michael Phelps and Rebecca Adlington.

Loughborough Expertise

Progressive tested a selection of elite triathletes running and cycling in the LZR racer Tri-Pro suit in a controlled climate chamber. With a constant temperature of 32°C and 70% humidity, the suit’s quick dry, moisture wicking properties were pushed to the limit. Infrared skin temperature measurements were captured, along with the athlete’s perception of comfort, fit and function.

Using the intelligence gathered from this research, Speedo and Progressive have worked together to develop a new triathlon suit, designed to be the lightest, fastest-drying and most comfortable suit on the market. The LZR racer Tri-Pro suit has been very well received by both the high performance and mass market.
