Academic entry requirements as agreed at the meeting of the Partnership Project Group ‘Sub-Group on Fees , Scholarships and Admissions Procedures’, held on 9th September 2008. Revisions occur in consultation with LU International Office and Admissions Team (eg new country such as Om an in 2011 or pathway such as AP3 route).

IELTS score of 5.5 or above with a s core of 5.0 or above in writing.

4. Programme structure

4.1       The programme will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of University Regulation XXIII – Validated Undergraduate Awards (Higher Education in UK Further Education Colleges), as modified by and set out in the relevant agreement between the University and Loughborough College.

 

4.2        Content

Students take modules with a total credit value of 120 over the two semesters.

 

Students should select modules appropriate to their preferred HE subject destination.  The matrix in 4.3 below shows the module selections students will require for entry to individual departments at Loughborough University.

 

Option Choices are subject to availability and timetable restrictions. Selection of options in semester 2 must take into account pre-requisite modules from semester 1 as stated in the module specifications. Modules shown (C) are compulsory, others are specified as Preferred (P), Optional (O) or Disallowed (X). C1* and C2* denotes students must choose either the two C1 or the two C2 subjects as set by the destination departments (see matrix in 4.3).

Business and Economics Programmes

4.4        Late submission of work

 

Students will be expected to submit work or attend for examination on the published date for each element of assessment.  Extensions can be agreed only by prior consultation with the tutor concerned with the particular module. Such extensions can only be granted for one week after the original assessment date.

 

4.5        Impaired performance

 

Students who cannot meet an assessment deadline for legitimate reasons, for example health or personal circumstances, may apply for special consideration using the University’s Impaired Performance Form.  Impaired Performance claims will be considered by a Foundation Impaired Performance Committee chaired by the University’s Foundation Programme Director in the first instance and recommendations subsequently forwarded to the Examination Board.

 

4.6        Review

 

This specification will be reviewed annually and any amendments published in a revised version.

 

 

 

5. Criteria for Progression and Degree Award

5.1 Criteria for Achievement

 

The pass mark for individual modules is 40%.  Individual modules are not graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. To receive the award, candidates must pass all modules (120 credits).

The award will be graded as follows:

Progression Scholarships (25% off tuition fees) are applicable in the case of some programmes. Scholarship criteria, where appropriate, are printed in Appendix 1.

5.2 Criteria for Progression

 

To gain credit in any module, the overall module mark must be equal to or in excess of 40%.  In addition, different progression criteria exist for each intended degree level programme as indicated below.  Where a department specifies progression requirements of 100 credits rather than 120 credits, a minimum performance of 30% is required in the remaining 20 credits. Criteria apply to all degrees within a department.  Unless stated otherwise below, candidates must also achieve IELTS of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in all parts. Some departments may require success at interview as part of the selection process, as indicated below.

  1. In order to progress to Part A of the BEng degree programmes in the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering candidates must accumulate 120 credits and achieve 80% or better in modules LGF201 and LGF203, 70% or better in modules LGF101 and LGF102 and achieve an overall average of 60%. 
  2. In order to progress to part A of the BEng degree programmes in the Department of Chemical Engineering candidates must accumulate 120 credits, and achieve at least 60% in modules LGF201, LGF203, LGF101, LGF102, LGF303, LGF304 and LGF305.
  3. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the Department of Chemistry, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits, must achieve an average of 50% overall and achieve 60% or better in modules LGF303, LGF304 and LGF305.  Where a candidate achieves 70% in the two English Language modules LGF001 and LGF002, there will be no further IELTS requirement.
  4.  4.1     In order to progress to part A of the MEng Civil Engineering programme, candidates must accumulate 120 credits, achieve an overall average of 65% and achieve a mark of at least 70% in the four modules LGF201, LGF203, LGF101 and LGF102. 
    4.2     In order to progress to part A of the BEng Civil Engineering programme candidates must accumulate 120 credits, achieve an overall average of 65%, and achieve a mark of at least 65% in the four modules LGF201, LGF203, LGF101 and LGF102. 
  5. In order to progress In order to progress to part A of the Architectural and Engineering Design Management Programme in the School of Civil and Building Engineering students must pass all 120 credits, and achieve an overall average of 60%.
  6. 6.1     In order to progress to part A of the degree programme of Computer Science and Mathematics in the Department of Computer Science, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve at least 75% in the modules LGF201 and LGF203 and 50% in LGF301, LGF302, LGF308.
    6.2     In order to progress to part A of all other degree programmes in the department of Computer Science, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve at least at least 60% in the modules LGF201 and LGF203 (or business maths modules) and at least 50% in the modules LGF301, LGF302 and LGF308.
    Where a candidate achieves 70% in the 2 English Language modules LGF001 and LGF002, there will be no further IELTS requirement.
  7. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits, an overall average of at least 50% and module marks of at least 60% in the modules LGF201 and LGF203.
  8. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the School of Mathematics, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits including 80% or better in modules LGF201 and LGF203 and achieve an overall average of at least 65% 
    Where a candidate achieves 70% in the 2 English Language modules LGF001 and LGF002, there will be no further IELTS requirement.
  9. 9.1     In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in Mechanical Engineering, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve an overall average of 60%.  In addition, they must achieve a mark of at least 70% in modules LGF201, LGF203, LGF101 and LGF102.
    9.2     In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in Manufacturing Engineering or Product Design Engineering, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve an overall average of 60%.  In addition, they must achieve a mark of at least 60% in modules LGF201, LGF203, LGF101 and LGF102.
    9.3     In order to progress to part A of the BSc Sports Technology programme in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve an overall average of 60%.
    9.4     In order to progress to part A of the BSc Engineering Management programme in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve an overall average of 55%. 
  10. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the Department of Physics, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve at least 70% in modules LGF201 and LGF203, and at least 60% in modules LGF101 and LGF102. 
  11. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the department of Materials Engineering, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve at least 60% in LGF201, LGF203 and LGF101.
  12. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits and achieve an overall average of at least 70%.
  13. In order to progress to Part A of Business degree programmes in the School of Business and Economics, candidates must accumulate 120 credits, and achieve an overall average of 70%, with a minimum of 65% in every module.  Candidates must also achieve IELTS of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each part.
  14. In order to progress to Part A of Economics degree programmes in the School of Business and Economics, candidates must accumulate 120 credits, and achieve an overall average of 70%, with a minimum of 65% in every module.  In addition, candidates may be required to succeed at interview. Candidates must also achieve IELTS of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each part.
  15. In order to progress to part A of the Psychology degree programme in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, candidates must accumulate at least 120 credits and achieve an overall average of at least 70% and achieve at least 60% in LGF201 and LGF203. Candidates must also achieve IELTS of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6 in each part.
  16. In order to progress to part A of the degree programmes in the Department of Social Sciences, candidates must accumulate at least 100 credits, and achieve an overall average of at least 70%. Candidates must also achieve IELTS of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each part.

5.3        Reassessment

 

Students who fail to meet the progression requirements will be eligible to repeat the assessment for those elements on which they have not succeeded on one occasion only in accordance with Regulation XX, in order to reach the required progression threshold.

For the purpose of determining the award grade, any such reassessments will be capped at 40% or the original mark if greater than 40%, unless an Impaired Performance claim has been approved. For progression purposes, the actual mark will be used.

6        Scholarships

          A number of departments award scholarships to international students who meet specified thresholds. Applicable scholarships for international students are set out in Appendix 1.

 

7        Outstanding Academic Achievement

A prize of £100 to be awarded by Loughborough College to the student in the academic year on the Loughborough University International Foundation Programme with the highest overall part mark.
