Day, who has been part of the Lightning pathway since 2018, steps into the role after several years of progression through the programme, most recently leading the Under 19s. Her appointment reflects Lightning’s commitment to developing its own people and providing clear pathways for both coaches and athletes.
Alongside Day’s promotion, Taylor Wilkins will step into the Under 19s role, having previously worked with the Under 15s, ensuring continuity and further strengthening the Lightning pathway.
Speaking after her appointment, Day said she is proud to continue her journey with the club.
“I love it! I’m Lightning through and through,” she said. “It runs deep. Lightning just has such a legacy, alongside the University, and it holds something really special. It’s one of the best franchises out there and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of it.”
Having joined the Hub programme in 2018, Day has worked across multiple age groups and has been with the Under 19s for the past four years. She believes the move into the NXT Gen Head Coach role is the natural next step.
Day’s coaching philosophy centres on development, connection and long‑term impact, something she has already seen come to fruition with players progressing into Super League and England pathways.
She also paid tribute to the mentors and colleagues who have supported her progression within Lightning.
“I’ve been so lucky to be surrounded by such good people. Josie and Louise have been amazing mentors to me, especially during the tough moments. This club has such a strong foundation and an incredible group of players and staff to go into this next chapter with.”
With Lightning entering the new season as reigning NXT Gen champions, Day is excited by the challenge ahead.
“We’ve got a target on our backs, but this group won’t roll over without a fight,” she said. “They’re creative, fearless and full of flair, and I’m so excited to see what that looks like on court.”
Day will take up the the Franchise Pathway role as well as the Head Coach role ahead of the upcoming NXT Gen season, with Wilkins’ transition into the Under 19s role ensuring a seamless continuation of Lightning’s performance pathway.
