Lightning clinched the title in dramatic fashion during the final round of fixtures. Heading into the weekend, the team had the league in their own hands and knew that a win would secure the title. However, a narrow 45-41 loss to Birmingham Panthers on Saturday left their fate uncertain.
Despite the defeat, Lightning’s superior goal difference meant they remained in pole position – and a day later, confirmation arrived. Team Bath defeated Leeds Rhinos 56-44 on Sunday, ensuring that Lightning would top the standings and take home the crown by two points.
It marked the end of a stellar season for the Midlands outfit, who won 11 of their 16 games and scored an impressive 918 goals. Their success came despite numerous challenges, including early-season injuries to Scottish international Niamh McCall and Hannah Diamond, both ruled out for the season. The squad was also affected by player call-ups, with defender Celena Appleby-Prince and goal shooter Antonia Mitchell being drafted into Cardiff Dragons and Birmingham Panthers’ senior squads, respectively.
Still, Lightning’s resilience and squad depth shone through. A crucial Round 13 victory over Rhinos (52-42) proved pivotal, as they held firm to be crowned champions – a title ultimately sealed when Team Bath played a decisive role in the final outcome by beating Leeds.
