After an incredible 15-year career, Jodie Gibson has announced she will retire from netball at the end of this season.

The former Netball Super League champion and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist has decided to call time on her playing career.

“I am so proud that I have finished my career playing with friends, in a world-class environment with world-class coaches and players,” said Jodie, reflecting on her decision.

Jodie rejoined Loughborough Lightning this season, bringing experience and resilience to the squad.

“I wanted to get back to loving my netball and feel happy on court, and I have done this in abundance this year. I am so thankful for the combinations on court and the support from the staff and the wider community at Loughborough Lightning, which helped me do this.” Jodie added.

Gibson began her Super League career in her hometown with Manchester Thunder, lifting the title in 2012. She went on to represent Loughborough Lightning, Severn Stars and Saracens Mavericks. Her standout international highlight came in 2018, when she was part of the England Roses squad that famously won gold at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Reflecting on her proudest moments, she said:

“The Commonwealth Games gold is up there, but one of my proudest moments was returning to the court after two years out with injury and making it back after being told you’re not going to play again.

I’m also proud of the community that I have been able to make through netball and the opportunities the sport has given me.”

Jodie has had a fantastic season with Lightning. She delivers powerful performances on court and inspires those around her with her leadership and positivity.

We thank Jodie for everything she has given to the game and Loughborough Lightning, and we wish her all the very best in her next chapter.
