Teaching and Learning Committee

Curriculum Sub-Committee

CSC96-P34

* [Agenda]

Subject: Teaching Provided by the English Language Support Unit
Origin: Secretary

The Sub-Committee is asked to note that a proposal from the English Language Support Unit to offer a 10-credit optional module in the Use of English, for students on any programme whose first language is not English, was initially referred back and subsequently withdrawn following advice from the AD(T) and the Academic Secretary; this on grounds of principle (its availability) and practicality (resource issues). Alternative means of helping ELSU to reach the target group of students and resourcing the activity are being explored.

A separate proposal that ELSU offer two `modules' in English Language Communication and Study Skills to students on the BLS programme has been agreed, on the understanding that the `modules' will not carry modular credit and will be outside the University's modular scheme, and also that the Department of Information and Library Studies will pay an agreed fee to ELSU outside FRASL.
