PhD Topic/Title: Regionalism and Mediator Competition in Peacemaking: The Study of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in South Sudan

Regional bodies are increasingly becoming key actors in peacemaking, engaging in a wide ranging conflict resolution mechanisms especially mediation. However, competing interests jeopardise the need for a unified approach to mediation. Ibrahim seeks to problematise international/regional mediation based on the competition arising from the very fact that regional bodies are products of sovereign states in constant pursuit of national interests. This raises a fundamental question on the suitability of regional bodies to mediate.
