PhD Topic/Title: Tropical lake ecosystems in the Anthropocene: quantifying recent human impacts on biogeochemical cycling and biodiversity

The climate is changing, and this has a strong effect on ecosystems worldwide. However, climate is not the only driver causing changes in (lake) ecosystems, humans have a great influence as well. Western Uganda has a high density of crater lakes and a fast growing human population. These crater lakes provide critical ecosystem services which are of great importance for the environment and local communities. Previous research done on these lakes mainly focussed on climatic changes and/or had a low resolution. The aim of this project is to fill in the gaps and indicate human influence on the crater lakes and surrounding area.
