PhD Topic/Title: The geomorphic and hydraulic impact of complex weir removals: Evaluation risk in river restoration

Research

Weir removal is at the forefront of river restoration in compliance with the Water Framework Directive (WFD). While the benefits of weir removal are well understood, the potential risks and uncertainties remain poorly researched. The River Dove, which is the study site for this project, has ~116 weirs over 10km, many of which are being planned for removal. The aim of this project is to model (hydrodynamic) multiple weir removals in both space and time in order to ascertain the best way to remove the weirs with minimal geomorphic risk.
