Textiles: Innovation and Design BA offers you an outstanding, commercially relevant and innovative insight into the field of contemporary Textiles, and provides the opportunity to develop your skills through one of the 4 specialist pathways – Multi-Media Textiles, Weave, Print or Integrated Digital Practice, all of which are supported by excellent facilities, and technical expertise.
Textiles: Innovation and Design BA enables you to gain high level practical skills in design for Textiles, and offers you the opportunity to develop specialised skills in your second and third years through specialist pathways in Print, Weave, Multi-Media or Digital Practice. The course combines traditional and hand processes with digital technologies, and develops strong skills in drawing and making. The Textiles course has developed extensive links with industry, encompassing fashion, interiors, surface design and digital applications.
Our students are encouraged to gain recognition and experience by entering industry renowned competitions. In addition, in recent years we have worked directly with H&M, Ted Baker, Romo Interior Textiles and Cotton USA on industry-set briefs, offering our students relevant commercial experience.
Individual studio spaces are provided for second and third year students, creating a dynamic working environment. First year students work in dedicated multi-purpose studio spaces to reflect the breadth and variety of learning opportunities offered. This is supported by exceptional facilities and specialist technical expertise that enables you to experience a wide range of opportunities in both traditional and hand processes through to the application of newer digital technologies.
We encourage you to make independent visits to galleries, exhibitions and museums and archives for project research. Loughborough is ideally located to visit exhibitions throughout the UK, with London being only 1 hour 20 mins on the train, and is in close proximity to East Midlands airport.

Textiles: Innovation and Design BA offers you the opportunity to undertake an industrial placement in order to gain an additional award of Diploma in Professional Studies. Previous students have gained invaluable experience through working at placements in Europe, the USA and in the UK, supported by a dedicated Placements Officer and the Textiles staff team. Alternatively, you will have the option to study overseas at one of our partner institutions.
As a student, you will have access to a wide range of excellent facilities, including areas dedicated to printing, weaving, dyeing, stitch, embroidery and CAD, supported by knowledgeable technical staff and encompassing both traditional and digital approaches to practice.
In addition, you are offered the opportunity to access facilities across the School, which include, for example, photography studios, fine art printmaking, ceramics, and plastics workshops, where relevant to individual projects.
You will be taught by an experienced staff team with diverse, in-depth knowledge of Textiles design and process and its' relevance to the contemporary Textiles industry. Staff are engaged in both research and professional practice, providing valuable insight into activity within the Textiles sector.

We aim to ensure that all students have broad first-hand experience of processes involved in the planning and production of contemporary Textile outcomes, whilst developing specialised knowledge aligning with current contextual requirements - Interiors, Fashion, Textiles Art, Research and the developing area of Digital Production. We encourage the development of significant skills in the practice of Design, Art and Craft informed by an awareness of historical and contemporary practice.

Elephants and Engines: An Introduction to Creative Writing
This module will introduce you to techniques for writing fiction and poetry. These include imagery, character and location - allowing you to write in whatever form or genre you wish, and on any subject matter. Practical workshops and examples from contemporary literature will help you to write, and to develop your writing strengths.
From Print to Digital: Publishing Revolutions
This module provides multiple perspectives on publishing and the spread of ideas through print and the digital in society, and on key concepts and ideas from the publishing world. It traces significant changes that have taken place in the book trade since the invention of printing to the digital revolution and to explore the challenges and opportunities arising from these changes.
Philosophy, Literature and the Arts
On this module you will read and discuss some of the key ideas in philosophy that are central to literary study and theory, and to the discussion of art and its role in our lives and societies. We will be examining these alongside a selection of literary texts and visual art (sculpture, painting and photography) which pose, incorporate or illustrate philosophical ideas and questions.
African American Culture
On this module you will explore the complex formal and political questions raised by African American cultural expression produced between 1845 and the present. We will study a wide range of forms and media - literary, cinematic and musical - situating these in their shifting historical contexts, from the nineteenth-century American South to the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement.
Material Culture
Optional module taught by Communication, Media, Social and Policy Studies, focusing on the concept of physical and virtual objects. The ideas of consumption and possession are explored, including the notion of the body as a material thing and the nature of gift and exchange.
Creative Dissent: Protest, Activism and Art
This module highlights the social production of art.
Fashion Theory
This module will introduce and critically examine some of the main theories of fashion. It will identify and survey modernist and post-modernist theories of the nature of fashion as well as of the production, meaning and consumption of fashion.
19th Century Bodies
Word and Image: Verbo-visual Exchange in Art and Literature
This module examines innovative exchanges between word and image in visual art and literature across a range of media. It develops analytical skills through the close visual and textual analysis of works drawn from a wide variety of historical periods and genre.
Non-verbal Communication: Body Adornment and New Technologies
This module aims for students to develop an appreciation of body objects in life, art, design and drama, as well as gaining understanding and knowledge of the communicative roles of wearable artefacts and the relationships they can have with the human body.
Arts Management
This module covers a range of issues related to arts management including: the economic and political landscape for the arts and creative industries, careers in arts management, funding for the arts, establishing and running an arts-based organisation, arts programming, curating, audience and customer development, finance and fundraising, marketing, time management and project management.
Introduction to Multimodality
How do we communicate through images and what is the relationship between visual and verbal text strategies? The aim of the module is to introduce students to the study of texts that are created not just by using verbal language.
Costume Design
This module aims for the student to gain both theoretical knowledge of the function and historical development of theatre costume, and practical understanding of the creative process of design and making.
Modules studied include Innovation, Exploration and Invention, Textiles Research Report, and a Textiles Studio Practice Final Project.

How you'll be assessed
Textiles: Design and Innovation modules are assessed through coursework, using a range of methods to encourage students to develop a broadly relevant set of skills and competencies for use in industrial practice or further study.
Methods include: practical projects, industrial and self-generated project work, technical knowledge and training, development drawing, visual research skills, essays/reflective work, seminar participation, visual and verbal presentations, contextual research projects, workbook/log books, technical files, an industrial placement report and research report.
Exposure to a range of visual and contextual methods of communication builds effective and professional skill sets for maximum employability.

Placement year options
Textiles: Innovation and Design BA (Hons) offers you the opportunity to study abroad for a year or to undertake a placement year.
Additional award
By undertaking a year in placement or a year abroad, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you complete an industrial placement year you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS). If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you study abroad for a year you will gain a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS).

Typical offers for students from Australia are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Typically, we would require a score between 85.00 and 94.00. For students from Queensland, requirements from the Overall Position (OP) would typically be between 8 and 4.

Students who have studied the Tawjihiyah/Thanawiya amma (General Secondary Education Certificate) will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

Belgium
The Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (CESS) and Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (DSO) are both acceptable qualifications for direct entry into first year undergraduate courses. We typically require an overall score ranging from 75% to 85%. Where the 20 point marking scale is used, we would typically require marks between 15/20 and 17/20.
Specific subject marks may be required for some courses and where this is the case, this should be studied as a 4 hour subject. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 50% or higher in Maths within the CESS or DSO.

Cyprus
The Apolytirion is not accepted for direct entry to the University when studied on its own. However, we are happy to consider students taking the Apolytirion alongside either 1 or 2 A Levels. For courses with typical offer requirements of ‘ABB’, we would typically require 19.5 in the Apolytirion alongside an ‘A’ at A Level or 18.0 in the Apolytirion alongside ‘AB’ at A Level. Where courses require specific subjects, these must be taken at A Level.

Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 7 or higher in Level C Maths with the STX.
Students who have taken the Studentereksamen under the old grading system would be considered on a case by case basis with an average between 9.0 and 11.0 normally required.

For students taking the Gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus with the Riigieksamitunnistus, we typically require a high average grade between 4.3 and 4.8 in the Gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus as well as an average percentage between 77% and 90% in the Riigieksamitunnistus.
Specific subject marks may be required for some courses. For Engineering and Science courses, we would expect students to have studied Lai Matemaatika.
Students with a score of 4.0 with 70% average from state exams would be considered on a case by case basis for the Loughborough University Foundation Year

European Baccalaureate
For students taking the European Baccalaureate, we typically require an overall average mark between 78% and 88% with specific subject marks (normally 8.0 or higher from a 4 or 5 period subject) required for some courses.
Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 6.5 or higher in Maths 3.

Faroe Islands
Students taking the Studentsprógv would normally be required to achieve a score between 8.0 and 10.5 with specific subject marks (either 10 or 12) required for some courses.

Finland
For students taking the Ylioppilastutkinto / Studentexamen, typical offer requirements would normally be based on achievement in best 4 subjects. Offers will typically be expressed as four letter grades ranging from MMMM (achieve Magna cum laude approbatur or higher in four subjects) to LEEE (achieve Eximia cum laude approbatur or higher in four subjects with at least one subject at Laudatur).

France
For students taking the French Baccalaureat, we typically require a range from 13.0 – 15.5 with specific subject marks required for some courses.
Students applying for Science or Engineering courses would generally be expected to have followed the Science (‘S’) stream. Students following the Option Internationale (OIB) will often receive a slightly lower offer.
Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of 10 or higher in Maths within the Baccalaureat.
Students taking the Baccalaureat Technologique will be considered for first year entry on a case by case basis where subjects studied are relevant to the university course applied for.

Students taking the WASSCE will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

Students taking the Greek Apolyterion are normally required to also take the Panhellenic Exams. Typical offers are based on the General Access Grade in the Panhellenics and range from 16.5 to 19.0 depending on the course applied for. Where courses have specific subject requirements, these should be taken as ‘Direction’ subjects within the Panhellenics. Students applying for Science or Engineering courses would generally be expected to have followed the Sciences direction. We will also normally ask for a mark between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion certificate.
Students who have studied 1 or 2 A Levels alongside the Apolyterion (without taking the Panhellenic Exams) would normally be required to obtain high grades in their A Level exams along with an average mark of between 17.0 and 19.0 in the Apolyterion. Where courses have specific subject requirements, these should be taken as A Levels.
Students taking a Foundation course alongside the Apolyterion will be considered on a case by case basis.

Hong Kong
Typical offers for students taking the HKDSE vary by course and range from ‘5, 4, 4’ – ‘5*, 5, 5’ from best 3 subjects, of which 2 must be electives and excluding Liberal Studies and Chinese. Where courses require specific subjects, we would be looking for grades between ‘4’ and ‘5*’ in these subjects.
For courses that require Maths as part of their A Level offer, this should be taken at extended level in the HKDSE. Where courses require achievement in GCSE Maths, we would normally look for a score of ‘3’ or higher in core Maths.

India
Typical offers are based on the Standard XII school leaving qualifications. When awarded by CBSE, ISCE or West Bengal Exam Boards, we typically ask for results in the region of 78% - 88% average performance from best 4 subjects. For other state boards, we would be looking for achievement between 83% - 93% from best 4 subjects. Specific subject marks at Standard X or Standard XII may be required for some courses.

Where courses have specific subject requirements, we would expect these to be studied as a 5-unit subject and look for achievement between 80% and 95%.

To satisfy English language requirements, we normally ask for a score of ‘610’ in SAT I Evidence-Based Reading/Writing although some programmes have higher requirements.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by installment.
Additional costs
The School will cover the cost of materials, which are necessary to develop an understanding of the workshops. Any further costs incurred as part of project preparation and submissions are to be covered by student, and will vary depending on creative decisions, choice of materials and production techniques. Students will not gain any marking advantage merely through the costly development of work.
