The REAL Loughborough University

With so many universities to choose from, we want to help you get to know Loughborough University a little better so that you can make informed decisions on whether you would like to study with us.

When choosing where to study, we know it can be so easy to get hung up on league table results or side-tracked by impressive facilities. This is completely understandable and don’t get us wrong, these factors are important, but sometimes they can make us forget what we actually value in a university. We’re talking the fundamentals of who we are, what we stand for and what we believe in.

Over the last 12 months, through spells of lockdown and social isolation, we’ve all had the opportunity at some point to take a step back and reflect on what really matters to us in life. In these moments, we’ve realised that material things are not as important as we once thought (OK… yes, apart from Netflix). But instead, what we value and treasure the most are aspects such as our health and relationships with our loved ones.

With this in mind, putting league tables and fancy facilities aside, we want to help you get to know the real Loughborough University so that you can make informed decisions on where you would like to study.

We care about your future and want you to find a university that’s perfect for you – whether that be Loughborough or elsewhere. At this stage in your journey, we thought it would be useful to go back to basics and share our core values with you, so that you can get to know us a little better. Who knows, maybe this will help you to determine whether we’re on the same page, and whether you can see yourself at Loughborough.

Community

What genuinely impressed me when I got here, was the people - I cannot stress this enough; people at Loughborough, be it students or staff, are so kind and genuine. It’s unbelievable!

The Loughborough family is made up of more than 18,850 students from over 145 countries and together, we have a very special bond. We are known for our vibrant, inspiring and welcoming campus community but you’re probably wondering what it’s really like behind closed doors? Well, the truth is – the level of friendship, respect and kindness our students show towards each other and our staff is immense.

We know that before joining university, some students spend a lot of time worrying about whether or not they’ll fit into various social settings. If this all sounds too familiar – remember, you’re not alone and these feelings are completely normal. Let’s face it, you’re about to embark on a brave new adventure, maybe you’re leaving home for the first time or even moving to a different country. We want you to know that the most important thing to us is your safety and happiness and this is where our fantastic community comes in.

Your fellow peers, you academic tutors, your hall wardens, your support services will be behind you every step of the way. You’ll be surrounded by so many people who are there to comfort, advise and support you through your first months, and beyond! Within our campus community you’ll have the freedom to express yourself, the opportunities to find life-long friends and the experiences to better your future prospects.

So, is it really as good as what it sounds like on paper? Yes, the Loughborough family offers a true sense of belonging and we’re proud that our students agree. Take a quick look at what some of them say about our campus community:

Sustainability

We care deeply about protecting the environment and are passionate about creating a sustainable campus which makes a positive impact on the surrounding communities. Reducing waste, emissions and our shared carbon footprint are high on our agenda and we are taking great steps to achieve our goals. Here are just a few examples of what we do on campus:

  • In 2018/19 over 75% of the waste produced on campus was recycled and a further 18% was turned into energy.
  • All of our catering outlets have introduced reusable cups to help us cut down on single-use products.
  • We have planted 7,500 trees to preserve our precious wildlife and sustain their natural habitats. This is in addition to the two ancient woodlands we are lucky enough to have on campus. In fact, a whopping three quarters of our 440 acre campus is green which offers plenty of spaces for our resident badgers, foxes, squirrels, frogs, newts and dragonflies to roam.
  • We have achieved a bronze award as a hedgehog friendly campus, and we work hard to improve their environments and circumstances to prolong their life span.

If all that wasn’t enough, let us fill you in on a little known fact about Loughborough University. Did you know that every year, we harvest and sell our very own organic honey? In a quiet spot of Holywell Park live thousands of honeybees which are looked after by our apiary volunteers. The University took on responsibility for these colonies in 2013 in a bid to support the declining bee population whilst increasing pollination and biodiversity on campus. Other than the university’s impressive top rankings, I was more impressed to witness what I considered to be the most important aspect when choosing a university - the community. The friendly attitude, modesty and humility of students and staff at Loughborough will always be a highlight about the university and are why I am proud to call myself a Loughborough student.
