Renewables: Integration of Renewables - Distance Learning

3 February 2020 - 17 June 2020

This 15-week online course covers the electrical engineering associated with renewable energy systems, and particularly the integration of renewable energy systems into existing electrical power systems. The course presents internationally applicable principles, rather than country-specific regulations and practices, and is primarily intended to equip designers rather than installers.

This course covers the structure and operation of:

  • Electrical power systems (transmission and distribution)

  • Electrical machines (conversion of mechanical power to electricity)

  • Transformers and power electronic converters

  • Renewable-energy systems (electrical aspects)

  • Distributed generation.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Outline suitable electrical connection arrangements for a range of renewable-energy system types and sizes;

  • Identify potential benefits and difficulties regarding the electrical integration of renewables, and set these in perspective;

  • Perform basic calculations regarding the performance of electrical generators connected to power systems.

Content includes:

Power system architecture (transmission and distribution systems); loads, generation and power balance; synchronous and induction machines; power-electronic converters; active, reactive and apparent power; three-phase; voltage control; load flow; fault level; generators powered by renewable-energy; distributed generation and islanding.

You can choose to take *formal assessment at Loughborough and if successful can accumulate credits towards your personal CPD portfolio.  By obtaining credits you may also be eligible to progress towards a postgraduate award.

The deadline for booking is 6 January 2020.  Online booking is now available but if you have any further questions prior to booking please contact Jenny Evans.

*Taking an exam at Loughborough is free of charge.   An additional Loughborough administration fee of £250 is charged for taking exams off campus.  However you will have to pay further costs to arrange and use an approved local exam centre.  For more details please contact Jenny Evans prior to making your booking.
