Alumnus, International student

I worked with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) in Nigeria, providing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) related services, and I wanted to advance my career with a master’s degree.

Making the decision to study Water Management for Development at Loughborough was an easy choice for me because of the world-leading reputation of Loughborough's Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), which focuses on the WASH sector and hydrodynamics. The programme is taught by renowned professors who carry out world-class research in the sector.

The modules on this programme are highly relevant to solving the challenges of water sanitation and hygiene in the 21st century. Real case studies are provided throughout the programme to provide a better understanding of WASH challenges and potential solutions in developing countries, such as Nigeria.

My dissertation was based on evaluating the impacts of WASH interventions to control cholera in Sub-Saharan Africa. The process was enjoyable as I was able to gather new findings and get extensive support from my dissertation supervisor.

The support of the University has been incredible, especially as an international student. The University cares about adding value to your experience even before you arrive on campus.

I did not have to worry about transport from Heathrow Airport to the University as I was provided with a coach service that took me to my accommodation in Loughborough. The international society organised welcome parties where I met other international students who today have become lifelong friends. There are numerous sports and societies to join as well, including swimming, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The School also organised field trips to places around Charnwood to get acquainted, and also had a really exciting trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales.

In addition, I benefitted from the Hardship Support Fund, which has helped me massively. Loughborough's Careers Network has also helped me with my CV to ensure high employability.

Loughborough has inspired me to think out of the box. Without a doubt, I am now a better fit for jobs in the sector than before. If you're thinking of doing a degree in the WASH sector, do it at Loughborough.
