Project details
This research combines two current challenges for the built environment – the need for digital models for our community and the integration of those models into other systems and models that support the resilience of our society.
There is widespread support for the development of digital twins in our built infrastructure. These include the Hackitt Report which identified the need to develop a “Golden Thread” of information for buildings that cover their design, development and operation. The Construction Innovation Hub proposes that the digital twin can be used to simulate future scenarios to improve resilience and performance.
However, to date, the focus has been on individual buildings instead of wider communities. Moreover, a major challenge lies with the interoperability of digital twins and the other systems and models that support resilience within a community. This project aims to produce a road map of the level of detail required for digital twins to facilitate interoperability with other systems and models, at different levels of granularity. For example, how it can link with planning systems, flood models, and energy consumption systems. The methodology to be adopted will involve developing a digital twin of a local community and investigating the level of detail that should be provided to support interoperability with other modelling tools.
The successful applicant will join the Digital Transformation theme of the school’s Construction Management Group. This group has extensive teaching and research expertise in BIM and digital twins.

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment.
