Accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), our prestigious MSc Social Science Research (Communication and Media) is designed for students interested in pursuing a communication and media research career in academia or in industry.

The programme provides an opportunity to develop specialised research methods skills in communication and media in an internationally renowned school, as well as a comprehensive overview of the key methodological and philosophical debates that currently shape social sciences.

The School of Social Sciences and Humanities is a stimulating environment in which to pursue a postgraduate degree. It fosters interdisciplinary research and collaboration and it is internationally renowned for its research into communication and media studies.

Communication and media research in the School is conducted in its Centre for Research in Communication and Culture (CRCC) which was established in 1991. The centre is one of the largest of its kind in the UK and its core themes include: language and social interaction; media, memory, and history; and political communication.

The programme is in full compliance with the Economic and Social Research Council’s requirements for an MSc in Social Science Research. On completion of the course, a student will have met the training requirements for PhD funding from the ESRC, opening up the possibility of securing PhD funding from the ESRC.

Our Social Science Research MSc programmes are designed to produce graduates with rigorous research and analytical skills, who are well equipped to progress onto being high level researchers in their chosen field of study.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • advanced skills to undertake quantitative research in social sciences;
  • an in-depth understanding of the methods commonly used to collect, clean and analyse quantitative data; and
  • opportunities to develop abilities to critically evaluate the appropriateness of statistical methods commonly used to analyse quantitative data in social sciences.

This module introduces students to what methodology is, connecting to the ontological and epistemological debates in EUP133 Philosophy of Social Science. The aim is to support students to design realistic research for their dissertation in social science. The module emphasises the interconnectedness between concepts and theory with data collection and analysis.

Students will examine research methodologies across epistemological approaches and on the basis of this students will be able to submit a dissertation research outline at the end of the module. In the context of thinking about methodology, students will also address ethical questions about the relationship and power dynamics between the researcher and research subjects as well as those engaged in knowledge production outside of academia.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the different ontological and epistemological ways in which social science research is framed. This will then be applied by analysing pertinent theoretical approaches for their ontological and epistemological nature which are located in the critical traditions of thought. Their role in research design will be considered, especially with a view to the different sources of knowledge that are available and appropriate.

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct, analyse and report an original empirical study within the field of communication and media.

Optional modules (choose one)

Learn how social interaction shapes and mediates professional and institutional structures. Students will learn the theory and methods of Conversation Analysis (CA) and how to apply it to workplace settings such as emergency dispatch, classrooms, telesales, and counselling etc., with the overall aim of understanding and improving the effectiveness of communication in these situations.

The module aims to analyse how to conduct research with young people, paying attention to their social and spatial contexts. The module examines both theoretical and practical aspects of researching with young people in their socio-spatial contexts.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • gain a comprehensive and critical understanding and appreciation of qualitative and interpretative methods, in sport and exercise research generally and in their particular field of study
  • critically review and communicate how different qualitative research designs inform understanding in sport and exercise research generally and in their particular field of study
  • critique the process of guided inductive analysis and the representation of interpretative data
  • measure phenomena appropriately in accordance with research design.

The module is designed to introduce students to state-of-the-art research methods that are applied for the analysis of media and communication content and output, both on traditional as well as on new, digital platforms. Apart from providing the students with critical overview and discussion of strengths and weaknesses of these methods, both quantitative and qualitative, the module enables them to explore their practical application in adjacent seminars.

The aim of this module is for students to design, conduct, analyse and report an original empirical study within the field of communication and media.

Optional modules (choose up to two)

The aim of this module is to consider advanced approaches to quantitative content analysis, in particular assessing the extent to which computer-assisted analysis can extend the reach and rigour of statistical textual analysis. The module explores social media and legacy media data gathering and analytics. 

The aim of this module is to consider both traditional and advanced approaches to ethnographic research. By exploring recent debates and innovations in ethnography alongside practical sessions on adapting ethnography for contemporary challenges and applied settings, the module will equip students with a detailed knowledge of the methodological concerns underpinning ethnographic fieldwork allowing them to integrate ethnographic principles into their own qualitative research projects.

You will be assessed through a variety of coursework, including essays and reports. The final assessment is a poster presentation and a dissertation, based on an original research project carried out with one-to-one guidance from a supervisor.

Professor Paula Saukko

Professor of Social Science and Medicine

Paula draws from media studies, medical sociology and science and technology studies to form her research which is located between sociology and communication. Her current research focuses on mental health and digital media use.

James Stanyer

Professor of Communication and Media Analysis

James’ research interests lie in the field of political communication a multidisciplinary field that draws on the main social science disciplines. He has authored 3 books, 40 journal articles and book chapters and co-edited two collections, one which has become a widely-adopted student text.

Your future career

The programme is in full compliance with the Economic and Social Research Council’s requirements for an MSc in Social Science Research. On completion of the course, you will have met the training requirements for PhD funding from the ESRC, opening up the possibility of securing future doctoral funding from this research council.
