Scholarships

We are always looking for the very best athletes to be part of our teams at Loughborough. In support of this we run various scholarships for key sports and for athletes who show outstanding potential.

All of our student athletes in our performance programmes benefit from our unrivalled support creating a performance offer designed to maximise team and individual performance.

Our performance sport scholarships are designed to further support our best athletes. Through a mix of performance support and monetary contribution we offer an unrivalled support package which includes:

  • Up to £5,000 per year
  • Free membership of Powerbase, one of the country’s largest strength and conditioning gyms
  • Free Athletic Union club membership
  • Campus parking permit

Available Scholarships

Our Performance Sport Scholarships are an annual award; the information below provides further information for each of our sports.

Athletics Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have senior major Championships representation. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 3 senior ranking, and/or have been a finalist at a major age group or World Universities championships.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 3 U20, top 3 U23 and/or top 10 senior ranking.

Full criteria

Tier 1

£2,000 - £3,500 plus memberships

Tier 2

£1,000 - £2,000 plus memberships

Tier 3

£500 - £1,000 plus memberships

Selection for Major senior outdoor Championships selection (European, Worlds Outdoor Championships or Olympic Games)

Top 3 senior ranking

Top 3 U20/U23, or top 10 senior ranking (top 5 U20/U23 or top 15 senior for selected events) providing performance levels are close to latest respective UK U20/U23 Championships qualifying standards

Top 6 in any World or European Indoor Championships or top 8 Commonwealth Games.

Finalist (top 8) European or World U20/U23 Age Group Championships/World Universities/Euro Cross U20/U23, top 20 World Cross U20

Winning BUCS Outdoors or Indoors title, or finishing top 3 in BUCS XC Championships (assuming continuation of studies)

U20, U23 or senior UK national record.

Top 15 European senior XC, top 30 senior World XC

Placing in top 20 of European U20 or U23 XC Championships, or in top 50 of World U20 XC, or in top 30 of European senior or top 60 of World senior XC Championships.

 

Selection for any World or European Indoor Senior Championships or Commonwealth Games

Badminton Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 50 world ranking. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 100 world ranking.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 8 U19 or top 10 senior England (or equivalent standard) national placing.

Basketball Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have senior national team representation at the highest level of competition. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U20 national team representation at a major competition, U23 national team representation, or senior national team representation in a minor competition.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have national U18 team representation and have made a significant contribution at a major competition.

Basketball Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have senior national team representation at the highest level of competition, for example Olympics, World Championships, EuroBasket. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U19 World Championship representation (Division A or Division B representation is taken into account).

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U17 World Championship representation (Division A or Division B representation is taken into account).

Cricket Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have played a minimum of 7 either First Class, List A or Twenty20 matches. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have been a member of the England Development Programme at under 16, 17 or 18 or national equivalent programmes.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be either a County second team regular or an academy player with a summer/development contract.

An applicants’ attitude and commitment to training and Loughborough Sport is also taken into account, and all MCCU squad members have to go through an application and trials process. We may choose to defer scholarship decisions until later in the academic year.

Cricket Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have played regular senior international cricket within the past 2 years. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to be currently involved in the England Development Programme.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have played regular senior county cricket for the past 3 years.

An applicants’ attitude and commitment to training and Loughborough Sport is also taken into account, and all MCCU squad members have to go through an application and trials process.

Cycling Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have senior European/World Championships (or equivalent) representation for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have achieved a podium finish at Junior major international competitions for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have represented Great Britain, or a nation of equivalent standard, at a Junior major international competition.

An applicants’ attitude and commitment to training and Loughborough Sport is also taken into account, and all performance squad members would be expected to go through the Loughborough Cycling testing process and represent Loughborough in BUCS competition.

Football Scholarships (Men)

Two levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have been at least one of the following: an international representative at age group or youth levels; a contracted player with a professional club and played in the Premier League or England Football League (or league of equivalent performance level); a scholar at a Category 1 Academy.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000. To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have been at least one of the following: a scholar at a Category 2 Academy; an international representative at schoolboys level; an independent schools representative; have demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to the Club.

Scholars are expected to be available for selection for ALL our MFL commitments, which include out of term time fixtures such as Boxing Day, New Years Day, Easter etc.

Hockey Scholarships (Men)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have experience with either the England development or senior team, or a nation of an equivalent standard. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U21 or home nation senior representation experience, or equivalent standard experience.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U18 or home nation U21 representation experience, or equivalent standard experience.

Only players who commit to playing for Loughborough Students in the EHL North Conference will be considered for sport scholarship support.

Hockey Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have experience with either the England development or senior team, or a nation of an equivalent standard. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have England U21 tournament representation or other home nation senior representation, or equivalent standard experience.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U18 tournament representation.

Only players who commit to playing for Loughborough Students in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference North will be considered for sport scholarship support.

Netball Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have regular senior major championships representation for England or a nation of an equivalent standard. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U21 representation at World Youth Championships or part of the England Futures programme.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U19 representation at Netball Europe; U21 long squad for World Cup preparation; regular starting 7 Superleague; or National Academy experience.

Rugby Union Scholarships (Men)

Two levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have top nation senior international representation and/or be an experienced level 1 player (such as a Premiership squad player), or a regular Championship player.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000 plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have a Premiership senior academy and/or an U18 international experience.

The Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship

Loughborough University is delighted to offer The Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship to a high quality individual with Premiership senior academy, Championship, England Students, significant National 1 or equivalent experience. The scholarship is offered to support any Masters course at the University [NB: The funding is available for either the traditional one year full time Masters or for two years if the option to split study is taken].

The value of the scholarship is £2000-4000 per annum aligned to the playing experience of the applicant.

Daryl Jelinek studied at Loughborough University from 1980 to 1983, where he captained the rugby team as well as playing for England U23s. Daryl went on to play rugby for Blackheath, London Scottish, and the Anglo-Scots. When Daryl passed away in July 2018, the Daryl Jelinek Sporting Scholarship was established by Daryl’s family and friends to create a legacy that will continue to help young people at Loughborough for many years to come.

Rugby Union Scholarships (Women)

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around afurther £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have regular senior 15s major championships (6 Nations; World Cup) representation for England or a nation of an equivalent standard; Olympic or Commonwealth Games 7s representation. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have EPS (or equivalent) selection experience; Senior International 15s representation or Senior 7s representation at Rugby Europe.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have U18 representation at Rugby Europe 7s; U20s 15s representation; regular starting Women's Premier 15s.

Squash Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have either national team representation, be part of England Squash’s England Academy (or National equivalent), have finished within the top 10 of the British Junior Open (U17/U19) or World Juniors (U19), or be ranked within the top 100 on the PSA world rankings. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have either national team representation, be currently part of the England Squash’s England Development Squad (or National equivalent), have finished within the top 16 at the British Junior Open (U17/U19) or World Juniors (U19), or be ranked within the top 175 on the PSA world rankings.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would either be part of the England Squash’s England Potential Squad (or National equivalent) or have finished within the top 24 at the British Junior Open (U17/U19).

Swimming Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have gained a time within 1% of the 2019 FINA ‘A’ qualification time. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have gained a time within 2% of the 2019 FINA ‘A’ qualification time.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have gained a time within 3% of the 2019 FINA ‘A’ qualification time.

Triathlon Scholarships

Three levels of scholarship are available:

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have podium finish experience at European Championship level, or a top 5 finish at the World Championships (junior or U23). We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would be National Champion, have GBR representation at junior or U23 level, or senior major championships representation.

Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and AU Club membership (worth around a further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have podium finish experience at National Championships (junior or senior elite), World Universities representation, or a podium finish at BUCS Sprint Championships.

Olympic Sport Scholarships

Two levels of scholarship are available to summer Olympic sport applicants. (If your Olympic sport is athletics, badminton, hockey, swimming or triathlon, please refer to the sport specific information.):

Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus AU Club membership (worth around a further £100). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have senior European/World Championships representation for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard, and be part of their NBG performance pathway.

Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus AU Club membership (worth around a further £100). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would have age group European/World Championships representation for Great Britain or a nation of an equivalent standard, and be part of their NGB performance pathway.

All scholars are expected to join the relevant Athletic Union club, and represent Loughborough University in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions.

International Sports Student Postgraduate Bursary

We are looking for postgraduate students athletes who can add value to our performance programmes, and compete for Loughborough University in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.

Our International Sports Student Postgraduate Bursary is a 40% reduction in tuition fees, which have a value of between £7,300-£8,760 (set against the tuition fees of your chosen postgraduate taught programme ONLY). The bursaries are for those competing at a high level in sport, are funded by Loughborough University and are for self-funding students.

The standard for the award of bursaries is high, and the selection panel will be looking for the very highest academic and sporting achievers, so do ensure that your application is clear, and reflects your academic abilities, sporting achievements and motivation.

Students should submit an official application for their chosen postgraduate programme before applying for a bursary.

We currently have performance programmes in athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cycling, men’s football, field hockey, netball, rugby union, swimming, squash, tennis and triathlon. We would also consider lacrosse.

The deadline for applications is 31 May 2019. All applications will be reviewed after this date, and you will be contacted regarding the outcome by 30 June 2019.
