Loughborough Lightning is the number 1 premiership Rugby side in the East Midlands.

Boasting a number of internationals such as England Red Roses Captain Sarah Hunter, Lightning brings a wealth of talent and excitement to campus as the team goes head to head with the country's top female athletes each week.

In the spring of 2017 Loughborough Sport were successful in their bid to become one of the ten teams to feature in the brand new Tyrrells Premier 15s league, the top domestic Women's club rugby competition.

The team is coached by Rhys Edwards, assisted by Steven Hasley, Brad Jones and player coach, Sarah Hunter. Rhys is a former international Coach (Wales) for both 15s and 7s programme and has coached in the English Championship with Rotherham. A household name Sarah Hunter is the current England Red Roses Captain having led her side to numerous Six Nations Grand slam titles and is the second most capped England Women’s player of all time. 

In the 2017/18 season Lightning build a brand new team to compete in the inaugural season of the competition seeing them finish 5th ahead of several established clubs.

In the following two seasons Lightning found themselves placed third in the table, losing out to Harlequins in the 18/19 semi-final and the final part of the 19/20 season being cut short due to COVID.

The RFU announced a landmark partnership with Allianz as the league reformed ahead of the 20/21 season.
