Paralympic Games – day two review

Day two of the Paralympic Games saw more Loughborough-linked athletes competing on the world’s biggest stage for Para sport.

In powerlifting, Zoe Newson, who trains regularly on campus as part of the British Weightlifting set-up, finished a brave 4th in the women’s up to 41kg category.

Newson lifted 94kg in an incredibly tight group, but sadly the London 2012 and Rio 2016 bronze medallist couldn’t reach the podium this time around.

Elsewhere, a final quarter fightback from Great Britain’s wheelchair basketball side sadly wasn’t enough as they lost out 48 – 53 to hosts Japan in Group A.

Loughborough pair Amy Conroy and Laurie Williams shared the early points for ParalympicsGB before Japan built up an unassailable lead that couldn’t be overturned.

The GB women still have two more games to play in the Preliminary Round with Germany their next opponent on Friday (tomorrow) at 12:30 BST.
