It was Rhona Lloyd that stole the show this sunny afternoon at Loughborough scoring a hat-trick in the season opener against DMP Sharks.

It took a while for Lightning to find their feet, however, after building pressure Lightning looked threatening with ball in hand, breaking through the DMP Sharks line. Finding space out wide it was Lloyd that drew first blood scoring in the corner after quick hands from the backs. Play bounced back and forth between the teams, but it was DMP that took seven points under the sticks after a loose pass was picked up by the winger, taking the lead into half time 5-7.

Coming out strong from half-time DMP struck within minutes and Lightning were down to 14 players. Almost instantly Lloyd crossed the whitewash after picking up a loose ball from the restart and ran the pitch to score in the corner. Finishing off her hat-trick in style, Lloyd made a 50m run, weaving in and out of defenders to score under the posts. Not to be out done by her fellow winger, debutant and former DMP Sharks player Rachael Woosey stuck outside off quick ball to take the score to 20-12. With momentum firming on the home team’s side, a final flourish from the Lightning forwards saw a game winning try, ending the score at 27-12.

Lightning travel to Bristol next week, however make sure you catch them on October 5that home when they take on the TP15’s champions, Saracens. Get your tickets HERE.
