Loughborough smash English National Badminton Championships

Loughborough players once again proved that they are amongst the best in the country with a number of strong performances and results at the English Nationals in a very snowy Winchester at the weekend.

Sam Parsons was a finalist in the mens singles event where he lost in 3 games to longstanding England number 1 and Olympic quarter finalist Rajiv Ouseph. Sam took the first game 21-18 and then Rajiv bounced back to take the second 21-13 and the third 21-14.

In the mens doubles, Greg Mairs was a finalist with Peter Briggs (Loughborough alumni). They had a comfortable route through to the final where they faced number 1 seeds Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. In a close contest, Lane and Vendy ran out winners in 3 games - 21-17, 19-21, 21-10.

In the womens doubles, Jenny Moore made it through to the final with partner Jessica Pugh. In the final Moore and Pugh were beaten 21-18, 21-13 by top seeds and world ranked 33 Lauren Smith and ex Loughborough player Chloe Birch. Their route included a tough win in the quarter finals against fellow Loughborough players Viki Williams and Jess Hopton and in the semi final they came up against another Loughborough player in Lizzie Tolman and partner Abigail Holden. In the top half of the draw Hope Warner put in a good performance to reach the semi finals with Freya Redfearn before bowing out to eventual winners Birch and Smith.

The mixed doubles semis and finals saw plenty of Loughborough involvement. Jenny Moore and partner Tom Wolfenden were finalists, losing out in 2 straight games to Top seeds and world number 34 pair Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh. The all Loughborough combination of Matt Clare and Viki Williams were semi finalists and Lizze Tolman in partnership with Steven Stallwood was also a semi finalist.
