It was Lightning that stole the show as they put 55 points past Bristol Bears in the final game of 2019, gaining revenge from their last encounter in September.

In only a matter of minutes, an overthrow from the Bristol line out allowed Lightning to move the ball quickly to the backs and release Emily Scarratt, who skipped through the away team’s defence and scored under the posts.

The lead was quickly doubled as Olivia Jones wound her way through the Bristol team to score from the half-way line from the kick-off.  With attacking momentum in their favour, it was not long until Lightning were awarded a penalty try from a scrum five metres out to make the score 21-0.

Bristol looked threatening from a 5m scrum, however a knock-on over the line relieved some pressure from the Lightning defence and allowed them to clear their lines.  Two more try’s for Lightning through Katy Daley-Mclean and Detysha Harper saw Lightning head into half time 35-0 ahead of the guests.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, ruthless Lightning struck within minutes as Isla Alejandro caught a cross field kick for Katy Daley-Mclean on the full and cantered down the wing to score in the corner.

Fully in control of the game Lightning showed their dominance with Field, Bonar and Talling all crossing the whitewash in impressive fashion to put Lightning 55-0 ahead.

With only seconds left on the clock Bristol had one last chance to attack. Their driving maul kept tight and crossed the line to put 7 points on the board and brought an end to the game.

Lightning now head into the Christmas break sitting third in the table. They will be back in the new year with their first game against Saracens in January.
