Scholars continue strong start to league campaign

Will Dawes

Will Dawes opened the scoring for the scholars with a well struck free kick from 35 yards.

Loughborough University made it three league wins out of three and four in in all competitions as they secured a 2-0 victory away to Rothwell Corinthians.

In a physical encounter the scholars managed to get an early foothold in the game when Will Dawes opened his tally for the season firing home a free-kick into the Corinthians net from 35 yards on 4 minutes.

This was the perfect start for the Scholars who looked to stamp their style of play on the game as the half went on. However, the host side disrupted the Scholars flow and looked to catch the university on numerous counters with their direct play.
The epicentre of the Corinthians attacks came through Craig Maisiri who’s power and runs in behind troubled the Scholars back Line throughout the game.

HT 0-1

The second half saw Corinthians start brightly looking to level the score as early as possible. One of their best chances came in the 65th Minute when a quick counter was firstly managed well by scholars defender Townrow who prevented any pass to the on rushing attackers. After the attack had slowed down, Rothwell got the ball into the area and the resulting effort was well saved by Stallan in the Scholars net.

Despite Rothwell being on top it was the Scholars who scored the only goal of the second half. With Dawes being brought down around 10 yards into the Corinthians half, the resulting free-kick from Davis caused confusion between the Rothwell keeper and defender, who’s looping header evaded the keepers reach and settled into the hosts goal on 76 Minutes.

With 15 minutes to go the home side put the Scholars under a lot of pressure but the back line held out for their third clean sheet of the season away from home.
