Although this it was a mathematical certainty back in May, July saw Loughborough Students crowned British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) champions for the 39th consecutive year.

With the award presented at the BUCS Annual Awards Dinner, part of the week long BUCS Conference in Bristol, Executive Officer for Sport Ashlea Prescott received the award on behalf of the 4,500 students that make up Loughborough’s Athletic Union.

Winning BUCS titles in sports including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey and Swimming, Loughborough Students amassed a staggering of 6230.7 points; over 1,200 points clear of nearest rivals Durham. In fact this tally is also more than 500 points better than our winning total twelve months ago.

Of the news, Loughborough Sport’s Director of Performance and Development Richard Wheater commented:

We are extremely proud to win BUCS for the 39th year in a row. Of course the most important contributors to this are our teams and individuals who work so hard all year round to maintain this level of success and to them I offer my huge congratulations.

I am also grateful to the huge number of staff, coaches, practitioners, volunteers and others who make all of this possible. Our partnership with Loughborough Students Union is a critical part of Loughborough’s success and we are delighted to work with them to retain our overall title this year. For now it’s back to work and we look forward to renewed competition starting in a few weeks’ time!
