Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Loughborough University is a recognised Elite Training Centre and there are elite exemptions for our NGB partners and a number of our performance programmes. All other sporting activity including casual and public sessions in all our facilities will fall in line with the latest local guidelines.

We are striving to offer the best possible sporting experience within the restrictions that have been put in place, whilst at the same time ensuring a practical and safe approach to facility use.

Wearing face coverings in our facilities

It is expected that all sports facility users wear a face covering indoors at all times other than when taking part in high intensity activity; this includes keeping your face covered upon arrival, while chatting or getting ready, for low intensity activity (like stretching) and in between activities; the only exceptions are medical exemptions and activities in the water in the swimming pool.

We are always adhering to the very highest standards within our facilities so will be keeping this protocol in place for the rest of the Summer Term.  This ensures we minimise the risk to our sporting community, particularly for those whose performance could be significantly affected by a COVID-19 infection.

Before returning to campus

All students returning to Loughborough need to comply with University policies and to take regular Covid tests.  The latest University rules and restrictions for studying, working and living on campus are available here

Adhering to Covid testing

To help us maintain a safe training environment for all our community we will be monitoring that all students within our indoor facilities are complying with the latest testing protocols as defined by the University.  This follows similar procedures across other University facilities, the University policy is available here.

Sport on campus – key dates

We are following a phased return of sport to our campus following key dates in the latest Government guidelines.  These dates are indicative only and are subject to change should key criteria not be met on a country-wide level.

Where we have retained elements of elite sport with training and some competitions continuing, we are now at a stage where we can look forward to bringing back key elements of our wider student sport experience.

Between 29 March – 25 June 2021 we will be prioritising student sport activities in our facilities.  We highly value the experience our students have while being with us on campus but will endeavour to offer the best possible experience for our wider sporting community through this time.   Our goal is to offer all our community a safe and secure sporting environment to enjoy.  The following activities are planned to commence on the below dates:

Phase one - 29 March

Organised outdoor sport is permitted providing it is formally organised and follows COVID-secure guidance. All activities and facilities available on campus will be bookable through our Loughborough Sport app.

  • Performance programmes and AU clubs will be able to return to outdoor training and fixtures.  All activity needs to be part of an organised club or performance programme training and must follow the latest Covid guidelines.  All club members will need to book onto their relevant sessions within the Loughborough Sport app, as per protocol applied previously in the Autumn term.
  • The Easter Series.  Combining some of your favourite sports programmes including IMS, Social Sport and My Lifestyle to create a range of competition and recreational activity available to our students over the Easter Holidays.  The full programme of activities is available to see and book in our app.
  • Facilities available to book.  Artificial pitches are available for small-sided football, cricket nets and beach park are all available to book through the ‘facility hire’ tile in our app.  Please note that the person making the booking will take the responsibility of being the Covid Marshall for this booking. Bookings can be made 48 hours in advance, we will look to increase this time period going forwards.
  • Outdoor recreational spaces.  Ball Park, Paddock Pitch and Games Park are available to use without booking.   Please note that within Government guidelines a maximum of 2 households or six people can play together at the same time.  There are a small number of bookings through Easter allowing our Basketball team to train on Ball Park.  In these rare occasions you will be advised by a member of staff when the team arrive.
  • Spectators will not be permitted on campus until further notice - we look forward to welcoming our fans back as soon as possible!

Phase two – 12 April

Opening our gyms

We will be opening our gyms for general access on 12 April.  Following the latest guidelines, we will not be offering indoor exercise classes, but we will continue to run our virtual class programme exclusively for all our members to access via the Loughborough Sport app.  Access to these classes is included in your membership.

Dependent on your membership with us, we will support you in the following ways:

  • For students with academic year memberships running until August 2021, all days lost due to closure will be reviewed at the end of your membership and you will be compensated accordingly.
  • For all other members, we will extend your membership by the time lost due to this closure.

Full membership term and conditions are available here.

Your questions

We will continue to monitor the situation and work together to prioritise and reopen all of our facilities as soon as it is safe to do so. We would like to thank each and every one of our members for your support. We will continue to update your frequently asked questions as soon as possible.

Student sports clubs

We are excited that there are changes from the week commencing 17th May that will allow more activity across our clubs and societies in a safe manner.  We are awaiting governing body guidance on the detail to return to action.

Where a sport has a governing body that guides their sporting activity, we will continue to follow this so will be approving changes to return to play protocols in line with published information.  Until renewed guidance is published, our activity will continue along current practices.

Where a sport doesn't have a governing body that guides their activity, we will continue to assess if the activity fits into the exemptions allowed for fitness classes.  Fitness class provision is permitted and numbers are limited to the size of the venue that can operate whilst, crucially, social distancing is maintained.

For all enquiries please contact your AU representative.
