Commonwealth Games 2022 roundup

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games – Loughborough highlights, day two

Day two of the Commonwealth Games saw Loughborough add another silver medal to its growing tally.

Alumna Abbie Wood formed part of Team England’s Women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay which made the podium after edging out third-placed Canada in a thrilling final.

Wood was joined by Anna Hopkin – who trains at the University –, Loughborough College learner Freya Anderson, and Isabella Hindley. To read the full report, follow the link below:

Staying in the pool, Adam Peaty returned to competitive action for the first time since fracturing his foot in May. The Olympic champion didn’t disappoint, easing through to tomorrow’s 100m breaststroke final.

Peaty will be joined in the final by alumnus James Wilby who also qualified well after last night’s medal success.

In the Men’s 200m Freestyle, alumnus Joe Litchfield made the final, recording a time of 1:48.87. Elsewhere another Loughborough graduate, Luke Greenbank, finished 5th in the Men’s 100m backstroke in 54.29.

In cycling, current Loughborough students Joe Truman and Sophie Capewell were both back in the spotlight at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

Capewell pushed hard to claim 4th in the Women’s Individual Sprints after taking the bronze medal battle to a decider versus Wales’ Emma Finucane.

Despite her best efforts, she sadly just missed out on a podium place but can be proud of another exceptional performance.

Following his silver medal victory yesterday, Joe Truman returned to the track looking to add to his personal collection. Chasing in the Men’s Keirin, he was involved in a nasty collision which saw the Sport and Exercise Science student knocked unconscious.

Thankfully, after a few minutes, Joe was able to leave the arena in a wheelchair. Everyone at Loughborough wishes him a quick recovery.

In hockey, alumnae Giselle Ansley and Laura Unsworth were on the scoresheet as England Women emphatically beat Ghana 12-0 in their opening match in Pool A. England’s women are next in action against Canada on Sunday (7pm).

Team England netball made it two wins from two in Birmingham, beating Malawi 66-41. Alumna Jo Harten looked in great form under the post as the home nation entertained in front of a jubilant crowd at the NEC arena.

At Coventry Stadium, England Women rugby 7s side – featuring Lightning’s Abbie Brown and Megan Gaffney – defeated South Africa 36-0 to set up a fifth-place play-off against Scotland on Sunday (6.22pm).

There was also more action in the wheelchair basketball group stages. Scotland Women recorded their first victory by beating South Africa 16-2, while Team England brushed aside Kenya in Pool A, 21-1.

In the evening session, England Women started their campaign in the T20 cricket competition at Edgbaston, beating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets. The Loughborough-linked quartet of Sophia Dunkley, Natalie Sciver, Amy Jones, and Sarah Glenn all played for the hosts.
