Back in the triathlon, Alumna Sophie Coldwell just missed out on the podium places in the women’s event, finishing a brilliant 4th in a competitive field.

Following the race, she said: “I’m pretty gutted with that…they were the three better people on the day. I will just recollect and get back and ready for Sunday (for the relay event).

“I’ve never experienced a crowd like that before at a home Games, so I just wanted to absorb as much as I could. We go again on Sunday.”

In gymnastics, Loughborough alumnus Daniel Lee turned on the style, recording a leading score of 78.05 thanks to top scores on the floor, rings and parallel bars. Lee will now be hopeful of medalling after topping his sub-division.

Back in the pool, Loughborough swimmer Daniel Wiffen had a brilliant opening day, setting two new Irish senior records in the Men’s 400m Freestyle.

Wiffen stormed his heat in 3:47.43, before finishing agonisingly close to bronze in the final, recording another new record time of 3:46.62.

In hockey, Team Scotland Women produced a stirring second-half performance to win their opener versus South Africa, 4-2. Alumna Charlotte Watson’s opened the scoring to give her side the perfect start in the competition.

Team England netball began their Commonwealth title defence, brushing aside Trinidad & Tobago 74-22. Alumnae Jade Clarke and Jo Harten both played, alongside former Loughborough College duo Helen Housby and Natalie Metcalf.

The rugby sevens also got underway with England Women – led by Loughborough Lightning’s Abbie Brown – recording a rampant 57-0 victory over Sri Lanka in Pool A.

In wheelchair basketball, England Women started their pursuit of a gold medal with a crushing 20-1 victory over Kenya. Alumna Amy Conroy and Lightning player Jude Hamer both featured for the hosts.

Team Scotland also began their Commonwealth Games journey as Loughborough’s Lynsey Spiers and Robyn Love appeared in a 12-5 defeat against a strong Australia side.
