Jamie Kirkhouse

Rugby Referee

Having already obtained his Rugby Referee qualification through the Welsh Rugby Union, Jamie started refereeing in the Intramural Sport Programme (IMS) as soon as he arrived. Whilst at Univeristy Jamie, who is involved with the Leicestershire Referee's Society, has officiated in a variety of environments, from IMS to British University and College Sports (BUCS) Men's and Women's rugby fixtures.

How did you first get involved in volunteering within sport at Loughborough?

I first got involved in sport through my hall in first year. I had gained my referee qualification before coming to University though the Welsh Rugby Union and so I started refereeing IMS games as soon as I arrived.

During your years at Loughborough what have you got involved in through volunteering within sport?

Since I’ve been at Loughborough, I’ve frequently refereed IMS games and played a part in some of the Super Series games. I have refereed both the BUCS women’s 1’s and 2’s games and also the men’s BUCS 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. Outside of University rugby, I am involved with the Leicestershire Refs society and have built some good relationships there. Away from Loughborough I’ve been refereeing back home, and was part of the refereeing team of the 2018/19 Super Rugby play-off, assisting Test match referee Ben Whitehouse.

What has your experience volunteering been like whilst at Loughborough?

My experience has been really good; everyone is really friendly and it’s always good to meet other people. The standard of rugby here is also a huge benefit to my officiating.

What is your most notable highlight whilst volunteering at Loughborough?

My highlight at Loughborough would probably have to be the Loughborough 7s tournament in the summer of 2019 with some really high-quality rugby being played across the day.

What’s the best advice you could give to a Loughborough student looking to get involved in volunteering & gain the most out of their university experiences?

The best advice I can give would be to just get yourself amongst it, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people and try new things.
