Megan Nunn

My Lifestyle Zumba instructor

3rd Year Geography student, Megan Nunn, pursued her love of Zumba since trying her first class at the age of 14 and utilising the opportunities through the CVA now leads a weekly My Lifestyle Zumba Class.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (hobbies, interests and background):

I first started Zumba when I was roughly around the age of 14. I walked out of my first class which I loved! Since then I have wanted to train to be an instructor and the CVA helped with this. My other interests include going to the gym and being a part of various committees.

How did you first get involved in volunteering within sport at Loughborough?

In my first year I saw an advert on the CVA website for a fitness instructor based in Zumba. After applying and an interview I was offered the role. I then had to undertake Zumba training in London before being able to teach.

During your years at Loughborough what have you got involved in through volunteering within sport?

I have had the opportunity through teaching Zumba to teach at welfare events, special events such as Fitfest and UV fest. I have also been asked to cover classes which gives even more experience which I would struggle to find elsewhere. Last year I also attended the CVA awards night for being nominated for an award.

What has your experience volunteering been like whilst at Loughborough?

My volunteering experience has been positive in every way. Not only do we get a lot of support from Loughborough Sport staff but we also have many opportunities provided to us which we would not get elsewhere.

How has being involved with Loughborough Sport helped you develop and progress (personally and professionally)?

Volunteering and leading classes, sometimes up to the size of 75, has been the biggest help in developing my confidence personally and professionally. Having to plan my sessions beforehand has developed my time setting. Also communicating effectively with all who are involved, including people who come to my classes who have questions and those in the Loughborough Sport office managing the programmes and volunteers.

What’s the best advice you could give to a Loughborough student looking to get involved in volunteering & gain the most out of their university experiences?

Take every opportunity that you can! There are few other places that have so many opportunities and such a good support structure within sport. Also if you feel as though you are not confident to lead a session or volunteer then get involved anyway as there are so many roles you can take on.

Finally, what do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Being part of the Mylifestyle programme is what I enjoy most about volunteering. I love seeing everyone arrive for a class, some who may have never done Zumba before and who are nervous and others who regularly attend classes and seeing everyone smile when a track they like comes on. Also at sessions for keep calm weeks and charity events when people thank you for giving them a break from studying.
