Gym, Health and Fitness

The gym, health and fitness strand provides two progressive pathways. Both look to develop your technical knowledge through a framework of vocational qualifications that are industry recognised.

Introduction

This strand is aimed at students who may wish to develop a career or gain experience in the healthcare, wellness and exercise instruction industry. This industry is one that has been growing steadily over the past few years and is estimated to reach £22.8 billion by 2020.

As a University with world class Sports and Fitness facilities which include Hollywell Fitness Centre and Powerbase we are ideally placed to give our students a unique volunteering experience within this sector. Each of these pathways will include access to full training, guidance and support from both internal staff and external industry experts.

What we Offer?

We offer two distinct pathways within our Gym, Health and Fitness strand, these include:

Recreational Fitness & Personal Training

This pathway enables students to gain Gym Instructing qualifications alongside applied voluntary experience within our fitness facilities on campus.

Dance Fitness Class Instructing

This pathway enables students to gain a variety of dance fitness qualifications alongside gaining practical experience delivering sessions within our physical activity timetables and recreational programmes.

Support & Development

We offer a range of support and development opportunities for all students involved in our Gym, Health and Fitness strand.

All volunteer Fitness Instructors complete a fully-funded YMCA Gym level 2 qualification and have access to mentoring by an experienced member of Loughborough Sport staff, in order to develop both their technical and non-technical skills set throughout their time on the pathway.

Students who become Dance Fitness Instructors will be given the opportunity to access a range of qualifications including Zumba Instructors courses and will be supported and mentored by Loughborough Sport staff to enable them to confidently and independently deliver classes to fellow students.

Students will also have the opportunity to access additional training and development opportunities from within the fitness industry. Over the past few years, our students have received a range Les Mills fitness qualifications and attended masterclasses from industry experts such as Adam Daniel – Founder and director of Lifelab.

Don’t just hear it from us!

My time within the Gym, Health and Fitness Strand has been invaluable. I was in close contact with other fulltime gym instructors which help me develop my knowledge on different types of workouts and ways of programming workouts. Dealing with different individuals enhanced my methods of tailoring workouts specifically to each person's goals and objectives. It also made me realise how much I want to follow a career in the Health and Fitness industry by motivating and helping me gain a placement, working as Strength and Conditioning coach at a Cricket Club.
