Grid Electricity consumption in 2016/17 was 13.8 million kWh

Historically the university has purchased green electricity but during the contract renewals in 2010 it was found the cost of Green electricity was too much to still be a viable option to us.

In order to reduce the environmental impact and carbon emissions associated with electrical use. The University is investigating the feasibility of installing a wind turbine to generate ‘Green Electricity’ funding is also pending for photovoltaics.

In addition to technical solutions to reduce the universities environmental impact the Facilities Management Department also launched an environmental awareness campaign in 2009.Between 2009 and 2012 the campaign saw finance savings of £300,000 and around 2000tCO2. The Campaign is still going strong encouraging staff and students to be Energy Aware.

To continue this, we have re-launched our sustainability awareness campaign entitled ‘It’s Better OFF’ to raise awareness about climate change and its causes as well as the practical things we can all do to improve our environment.
