It's Better OFF @ Home - Lounge

Why not try a few of these quick tips to make your living room more efficient?

Looking to save more?

Turn everything off, not just onto standby - turn it off completely. A million tonnes of greenhouse gases are pumped into the atmosphere every year by appliances left on standby in the UK according to the latest government figures, so it’s obvious to see where energy savings can be made. Switching off appliances at the mains and not on standby would save enough energy to power 2.7 million homes for a year. Make it a habit at the end of the day to check that you’ve taken the plugs out on big appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, right down to mobile phone and MP3 player chargers. It all makes a difference.

Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and typically saves around £55 per year. An ideal temperature is between 19 and 21°C. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time.

Close the curtains, stop the drafts. Before you turn up the thermostat, consider how effectively you’re keeping the heat you’re paying for inside your home. A major source of energy loss is through the windows, and curtains can help keep heat inside rather than escaping out. And before you turn on a light during the day, make sure that you’re letting in as much natural light as you can through the windows by fully opening the curtains.
