International Students Scam - Beware
30 August 2018
One of our Loughborough students has become the victim of a telephone scam.
The student received a telephone call from an individual who said he was calling from UKVI. The individual told the student that their visa had been cancelled and unless the student paid £400, they would be arrested. Unfortunately the student believed this and paid the money asked for.
This is a known scam which targets international students. The person is not telling the truth; UKVI would never ring with news that a student’s visa has been cancelled nor would they ask for money in this way.
If you receive a call like this, do not give any personal or bank details and do not pay any money to the person. It is ok to end the call (even though the caller may tell you that you will be arrested if you do).
If you have had a call like this and would like to discuss this and get some advice, you can receive help from Student Advice & Support.
