Using the library

Passwords and authentication

There are a number of different passwords that you may need to access online resources.

University username and password

Your University IT username and password is the one that you use to login to University computers, your email and the wireless network (Eduroam). You will have been given your IT user account when you joined the University.

Athens username and password

Many databases require an Athens account to access. To retrieve your Athens username and password log in to Learn and select the Athens password link under 'Student Resources' or Staff Resources'. Alternatively you can ask at the Library help desk. You will need to show your University ID card. Staff may also contact IT Services for their Athens account details. You can change your Athens password via the Athens website.

Important Note: We are currently in the process of removing Athens for accessing online resources and moving to a Single Sign-On system. See the latest updates on the Library news page. If you have any problems accessing online resources during the transition please contact us at

Resource specific usernames and passwords

Some e-journals and databases require specific usernames and passwords.  View the login details for these resources (log in with your University username and password to view these when prompted).

Accessing online resources off campus

We recommend that you use the University's Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client to use online resources off-campus.

Acceptable use

Please note that users of online resources are expected to abide by the University's IT Acceptable Use Policy and adhere to the Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988.
