Inclusivity and the Curriculum
- This policy aims to assist staff involved in learning and teaching to meet their professional obligations as set out in the Equality Act (2010)
The policy and procedure is designed to ensure that a student’s full participation in education and methods of demonstrating their academic ability, due to the presence of a health condition or disability, is managed and addressed in a timely, equitable and supportive manner.
This policy aims to assist staff involved in learning and teaching to meet their professional obligations as set out in the Equality Act (2010) for any student who requires consideration of their health, wellbeing or a disability to fully participate in their studies and make progress on their programme.
The University recognises the primacy of the Equality Act over any internal policies and compliance with legislative requirements will always take precedence. The Equality Act requires every member of academic staff to anticipate the needs of disabled learners in the design and delivery of the curriculum, including assessment practices. Advice on inclusive design and anticipatory adjustments with regards inclusive learning and teaching can be sought from the Centre for Academic Practice (CAP) and the Counselling and Disability Service (CDS).
This policy and procedure exists to support academic and professional service colleagues in establishing a shared view on:
• When the rationale for academic practice requires re-consideration due to a student’s needs.
• How to resolve dispute on academic practice and adjustments, on a case-by-case basis.
• The steps to be taken when consideration of a particular adjustment have been exhausted without reaching a resolution.
The policy document covers the definition of reasonable adjustments, embedded reactive adjustments and the responsibilities of both students and the University.
