Courses and Workshops
If you are seeking to enhance your communication skills for effective teaching, the Centre for Academic Practice offers a range of support.
Through a combination of workshops, a short course, online resources and one-to-one coaching we are here to help you address your voice/communication issues. Whether you want to achieve greater clarity in spoken English, learn techniques for good voice production or work with our specialist tutor on other specific issues, we are here to provide guidance and support.
A half-day workshop, 'Making the Most of Your Voice', runs regularly throughout the year. This provides help with general voice production and clarity in spoken English. To obtain further details of the workshops, and to reserve a place, choose the workshop from the Academic Practice category in the Learning section of the my.HR website.
For guidance on how to book onto a course via the my.HR website please look at the document below:
A short course designed to help you to communicate more clearly and effectively with students, especially in the lecturing context. The course is likely to be of particular interest to colleagues whose first language is not English, though it is open to anyone who wishes to improve their skills in this area of practice. With a primary focus on enhancing the clarity of your spoken English, the course will cover elements such as English vocal characteristics, exercises to develop a clearer English sound, effective presentation, structuring lectures and effective use of teaching materials and resources.
This 12-hour course normally runs twice a year as a 6-week evening course. The course is open to both lecturing staff and post-doctoral research staff who teach. Due to limited places on each course, priority will be given to academic staff.
The lead tutor on this course is our specialist adviser, Eluned Owen.

Communicate (Online - for Loughbrough staff and students only)
Communicate is an online teaching-oriented resource enabling staff to practise voice-related communication skills in their own time. Through video and animation you are able to see how and where English sounds are formed in the mouth, listen to correct pronunciation and do some practice exercises. Ideally, this resource is best used as a follow up to face-to-face provision.
