Loughborough Students Rugby Football Club have clinched promotion after being crowned the champions of the National 2 North league.

With four games of the season remaining the Students won the Championship with a 22-16 away victory against Sheffield Tigers.

Promotion to National League 1, the third tier of English rugby, means that the students are now one of the top 40 clubs in the country. A great achievement for a team made up of current students and has a high turnover of new players each season.

The promotion was achieved this year after the club narrowly missed out in the last two seasons following play off final defeats to Rosslyn Park and Jersey.

A try from Courtney Morrison had put the Student’s 13-10 ahead at half time. But with ten minutes remaining the Tigers had clawed their way back into the match, with the scores tied at 16–16.

However place kicker Andy Hall kept a cool head to slot home two late penalties that secured a famous 22 - 16 victory, and marked a great day in the club’s history.

Dave Morris, Head Coach of Loughborough Students RFC said:

“We are absolutely delighted for everyone involved. This Championship is not just for this group of players, but all those who have brought us through from level 14, the first rungs on the RFU ladder, and especially our first team manager Haydn Coley who has been there from the beginning.

“I would also like to thank to all the supporters, volunteers, parents and staff that have made this progression happen throughout the years, since we entered the league back in 1995.”

The students have four more games in the league to go before they finish the season with a special fixture against the Barbarians on 9th May.

Tickets for the Barbarians match will go on sale in April.
