£2million to boost science innovation at Loughborough

Loughborough University has been awarded over £2million as part of a national funding scheme to help turn the country’s best science ideas into good business.

The ‘Impact Acceleration Accounts’ are awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). They will give the nation’s best physical scientists and engineers the support they need to deliver greater collaboration with industry, bridge the gap between the lab and the marketplace, and help them accelerate the creation of impact from their research.

The award to Loughborough – worth £2,039,165 – will enable companies to engage with the University’s research projects at an early stage and benefit from the breakthroughs and knowledge they generate.

Increased numbers of Loughborough’s scientists and engineers will be able to spend time within business and industry, improving their knowledge and skills and returning to the lab with a better understanding of the way companies operate and the challenges they face.

The award will also provide ‘proof of concept’ funding, through which the University’s researchers will be able, for example, to undertake market research and develop prototypes to demonstrate the potential for and viability of their innovation.

Announcing the awards today, the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, said: “The UK's scientists are some of the most innovative and creative people in the world, but they need support to take their best ideas through to market.

“This investment I'm announcing today will help our leading universities become centres of innovation and entrepreneurship, generating commercial success to fuel growth.”

EPSRC chief executive Professor David Delpy said: “The research we support is recognised as outstanding on the international stage. These Accounts aim to make a step change in the impact that has on society: generating new business opportunities which drive economic growth, creating better, more informed, public policy.”

Professor Steve Rothberg, Pro Vice Chancellor for Enterprise at Loughborough University, added: “Loughborough has a long record of working in partnership with business, public and voluntary organisations. This award will allow our staff to enhance those partnerships, and ensure that our research and innovation are finding effective solutions to the technical challenges faced by UK businesses.”
