Loughborough University launches East Midlands Literary Salon

The first literary salon in the East Midlands will be launched at Loughborough University next week.

Literary Salons were first established in the 16th Century and were popular right up until the early 19th Century, particularly across Europe.  Traditionally, a host brought together a group of like-minded people for discussion and to increase knowledge.

The brand new Loughborough salon aims to reinvigorate the practice in the East Midlands.  It will offer an evening of literary conversation, debate and performance. Aimed at writers, authors, publishers, creative industry professionals, University staff, University students and literary enthusiasts in general, the idea is to network, share and learn in an informal atmosphere.

The event is a collaboration between the Department of Information Science and the Department of English and Drama at the University and is being organised in association with the Institute for the Future of the Book and Writing East Midlands.

The focus of discussion for the evening will be the issues that surround writing and publishing in today’s ever increasing digitally focused environment.  Guest participants include:

Allan Guthrie: Edinburgh based author, literary agent and digital publisher
Piegeon Park Press: Birmingham based e-publishers
David Varela: transmedia author
Pippa Hennessey: author and publisher
Ben Galley: self-published author
Joanna Ellis: the Literary Platform
Chris Meade: if: books
Simon Groth: if: books Australia
Comma Press: Manchester based publisher

There will also be a performance by poet Dan Simpson and an installation by Mark Goodwin.

Dr Melanie Ramdarshan Bold, Lecturer in Publishing at the University and Dr Kerry Featherstone, Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University are behind the idea. They hope the salon will be the first in a series.

Dr Ramdarshan Bold comments:  “In today’s increasingly digital market place it is vital that authors and publishers understand technology and embrace it where they can, particularly for promotion their work. At our salon we will explore and discuss all the issues and latest developments in a relaxed social environment.”

The Literary Salon event takes place on Friday 16 November.  It starts at 6pm and will take place in Martin Hall on the University campus.  Refreshments will be provided. Tickets cost £10 or £5 for concessions.  Tickets must be booked in advance and are available through Helen Relf (Email: h.l.relf@lboro.ac.uk).
