Study aims to increase transport choices for people with limited mobility

Izzy Jeffs

Local people with limited mobility are needed to take part in a Loughborough University study to trial a new website aimed at improving access to public transport.

Academics from the University’s Design School have been tasked with testing out the website – www.accessadvisr.net – by its developer, AccessAdvisr Ltd.

The company received funding from the Government’s Technology Strategy Board and the Ordnance Survey to set up the site.  It aims to make difficult journeys easier for people with limited mobility by providing information on the accessibility of travel facilities across the UK.

The Loughborough team want to speak to people from Nottingham, Loughborough and Leicester who experience physical difficulty when travelling.  They want to discover how more detailed information on the ease of access to transport systems could help people with limited mobility when researching and planning journeys.

Participants in the study will meet with a University researcher and be asked to view the AccessAdvisr website.  After using the site participants will be asked to complete a short questionnaire.  The research will take less than an hour to complete and all participants will receive £20 in vouchers.

Dr Chris Parker, who is leading the Loughborough study, said: “To ensure the website is as useful as possible we need to speak to those people who will make use of it.  By taking part in this study you will help us shape how the site works and the information it provides.”

Anyone interested in participating in the study should contact Dr Parker by calling 01509 223586 or emailing C.Parker2@lboro.ac.uk

Notes for editors:

  • AccessAdvisr is a crowd sourcing website (www.accessadvisr.net) that has been developed by Nottingham-based company AccessAdvisr Ltd. - a subsidiary of Integrated Transport Planning Ltd. (www.itpworld.net).
  • The team won seed funding through the Ordnance Survey and Technology Strategy Board’s 2011 Geovation Challenge (http://www.geovation.org.uk/) focused on the problem statement of ‘How can we improve transport in Britain.  AccessAdvisr was one of 6 innovations funded through this programme and a range of smartphone applications are being developed to complement the website.
  • Loughborough University’s Design School
(http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/lds/) is participating in the Ideas in Transit (http://ideasintransit.org/) project, which is a five-year project that applies User Innovation to the transport challenges faced by individuals and society. It is a unique collaboration between Government, Commercial and Academic thought leaders and their networks. It will influence intelligent transport decisions at policy, social, personal and commercial levels.
  • The team from the Loughborough Design School are conducting this research as part of the Ideas in Transit study.  The findings will inform both the on-going development of the AccessAdvisr website, as well as relevant but separate research into the way members of the public place value upon information in the public domain.
  • The research has been funded through a combination of the Ideas in Transit project and the Geovation Challenge.
