Loughborough students excel at Chinese up-cycling event

The ‘eco-square’ pendant enables wearers to show their support for sustainability.

Students from Loughborough University recently travelled to China to take part in a competition designed to encourage the up-cycling of industrial leftovers.

The intensive two-week challenge called for tutors from universities across the UK and China to collaborate in the development of design ideas and products which are up-cycled from industrial waste.  They were also asked to consider the sustainability of the up-cycling processes needed in the manufacture of these new products.

Three second year School of the Arts students – Paige Kenton, Emily Rumble and Chris Spiller – and their tutor Carl Silvester were selected to represent Loughborough University at the event, alongside nine other UK universities and six Chinese universities.

The competition was organised by the Chinese Guanzhou Academy of Fine Art (GAFA), the Cultural and Education section of the British Embassy, Guanzhou Low Carbon Industry Association and China’s principal recycler of industrial leftovers, the Guanzhou Valuda Group.

The competition was held in Guanzhou and included a visit to Valuda, one of the largest recycling plants in China.  This demonstrated to students and tutors the enormous volume of waste from industrial production which could be considered for up-cycling into commercially viable by-products.

Up-cycling designs developed by the Loughborough students included a basket for carrying small livestock, a child’s rocking horse and an ‘eco-square’ pendant through which wearers can show their support for sustainability.

All Loughborough’s students were presented with ‘Excellent Individual Awards’ and tutor Carl Silvester was given an ‘Excellent Tutor Award’ for their part in the competition.

Speaking about the event, student Paige Kenton said: “The project provided a great opportunity to work in collaboration with different cultural backgrounds and learn more about up-cycling.  This proposes a new approach to future design and I am extremely grateful for the experience.”

Tutor Carl Silvester added: “It was great to be part of a motivated and passionate team of professionals and students.  All of us were engaged in a rigorous and meticulously organised project, with high expectations to address critical issues on sustainability through the knowledge and expertise of design.”
