Honorary degrees

 

At Loughborough University’s summer degree congregations, to be held on the University campus and overseas, honorary degrees will be conferred upon eleven distinguished persons in recognition of the outstanding contributions they have made to industry, academia, business, sport, the arts, and modern society.

University Chancellor Sir Denis Rooke will preside over the Loughborough ceremonies, which will take place from Thursday 8 – Tuesday 13 July 1999. University Vice-Chancellor Professor David Wallace will officiate at the overseas congregations, to be held on Sunday 25 July 1999 in Singapore and on Saturday 31 July 1999 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Over 2,300 students will also receive their degrees at the same series of ceremonies.

Honorary degrees will be awarded as follows:

Mr Ian G McAllister, CBE

Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Motor Company Limited

Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech).

For outstanding leadership in the UK automotive industry.

 

Thursday 8 July at 3.00 pm

Mr Jeffrey Herbert, BEng, FREng

Former student; Chairman, Charter plc.

Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech).

In recognition of his distinguished career in engineering and business.

 

Professor David G Crighton, FRS

Master of Jesus College and Head of Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge.

Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).

For services to mathematics and theoretical physics.

Professor Anthony Ledwith, CBE, FRS, DSc

Chairman, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).

For services to science in universities and industry.

Dr Mary E Peters CBE

Olympic gold medallist.

Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt).

For inspirational services to sport including young people and the disabled.

Professor Dennis Swann

Professor Emeritus, Loughborough University.

Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).

For his outstanding service to the University and his pioneering work in European economics.

Mr Graham R Clark

Former student; Tenor.

Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt).

In recognition of his international career in opera.

Chairwoman and Creative Director, Designers Guild

Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech).

For outstanding innovation and successful exploitation of creative fabric and interior design.

Professor Gloria Lim, PhD, BBM

Former Professor of Botany, National University of Singapore; Foundation Director and Professor (retired), National Insitute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.

Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc).

For outstanding service to science and education and training in Singapore.

 

Saturday 31 July at 2.30 pm

Tan Sri Dato Ir. Abu Zarim bin Hj Omar

Electrical Engineering graduate, Loughborough College 1951; former Chief Executive of Tanaga Nasional (the Malaysian power generation board).

Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech).

For outstanding service to the country of Malaysia in developing power generation capable of meeting their industrialisation.

 

Dato Ir. Ho Thian Hock

Civil Engineering graduate, Loughborough College 1954, Ex-Director General of Public Works, Peninsular Malaysia.

Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech).

For outstanding service to the country of Malaysia in developing public works infrastructure, capable of meeting their rapid growth and industrialisation.
