Loughborough University launches new Liberal Arts degree course for 2022

Loughborough’s School of Social Sciences and Humanities is now offering students an opportunity to study a brand new, innovative undergraduate degree programme in Liberal Arts which will commence in September 2022.

This uniquely interdisciplinary programme cuts across subject areas for an exploration of what it means to be human in a modern world. Equipping students with general knowledge about social and cultural conditions, past and present, our Liberal Arts BA (Hons) degree will encourage students to think creatively and imaginatively about important issues such as identity, equality, and diversity.

The degree programme offers a focused but flexible approach and enables students to construct their own course. The core of the programme consists of introductory modules on the methods and practices of Liberal Arts which will give students the tools to analyse cultural norms and values, literary and non-literary texts, museum and archives practices, and more.

The added flexibility means that during the first year, students within the cohort will take modules in three major pathways: Art History and Visual Culture, English, and History. Students will then specialise in two of these pathways throughout the second and third year of study.  Optional modules are selected from a range of choices in areas such as communication and media, philosophy, and social sciences. By combining both core and optional modules, students are introduced to all aspects of the subject and are offered the critical skills, creative aptitudes and entrepreneurial spirit that are highly valued by employers.

"We are delighted to launch our new Liberal Arts degree which offers students the opportunity to learn and think across disciplinary boundaries about the issues within modern society and its institutions, benefit from the considerable research and teaching excellence as they focus on our Liberal Arts pathways of History, English, and Art History and Visual Culture, and to flexibly pursue their interests across a range of other modules, including studying a language throughout their degree if they wish.”  - Jennifer Cooke, Head of English.

A professional placement year, and the chance to study abroad are available to students looking to test drive their careers before returning for their final year of study. Students will also be offered the opportunity to learn one or more modern languages during their course to a level appropriate to their needs and abilities.

Our Liberal Arts degree will be delivered by leading researchers and students will have access to computer labs, fully equipped with dual-boot PC/MAC machines and the latest specialist software, as well as studio, performance, and rehearsal facilities that support a range of activities and events, from film screenings and live music to hands-on workshops and talks.
