Product Design and Technology student gives an insight into his time on placement

Eddie Carrington, a Product Design and Technology student is currently on a placement year with technical design and production company, Wonder Works as their Junior CAD Designer.

Wonder Works specialise in world-wide live events and have recently worked on productions for artists such as Ed Sheeran, Abba, and the Rolling Stones, as well as ceremonies including the Expo Dubai 2021, and UAE’s National Day celebrations.

Our students opt to take a placement year as it provides a fantastic way to gain valuable work experience and apply the skills and knowledge learnt on our courses, as well as receiving a Diploma in Professional Studies as additional award.

Having always had an interest in the live experiences, and not having heard of anyone else from his course doing a placement at a technical production company, Eddie sent in a speculative application to Wonder Works along with his portfolio and was excited to be offered an interview.

Eddie explains that:

“I love designing consumer products, but my real passion lies in creating unforgettable live experiences. I had heard about Wonder Works even before starting my degree, and I loved the idea of using technical production to help turn clients’ ideas into real events that leave a lasting impression on people.”

Since joining Wonder Works, he has worked on a number of projects such as prototype panels for an automation company, system layouts for theatre, bespoke enclosures, and supporting with the office’s elaborate annual Christmas window display.

Eddie continues to say:

“I decided I wanted to use my placement year to apply the skills I’ve been learning on my course to a completely new area of design. Although the projects here have been very different from the projects on the course, the skills have been very transferrable, especially the CAD and designing for manufacture.”
