Textiles student artwork to be showcased on new student accommodation development

Textiles finalist, Flo Sargent, has been selected as the winning design which will see her artwork commissioned for a newly built student accommodation development in Loughborough town centre.

Future Generations and Rio Architects have teamed up with the Loughborough University Creative Arts department to promote an opportunity asking artists to create artwork that will be applied to their latest student accommodation development. Luxurio is a new luxury development between Aumberry Gap and Leicester Road, and the artwork will be applied to the western façade of the central block, making it highly visible.

Flo decided to enter the competition as she has wanted to work on murals and large-scale art installations, and this provided her with the perfect opportunity to start doing this.

Speaking of her work, Flo explains that:

“The saturated, fun and animated mural is to be digitally printed onto vinyl and set in 2 large wall panels of 5x10 Metres each. The aim of the work is to energize passers-by and bring colour to the community.

The artwork illustrates the diverse community in Loughborough dancing, socialising, and playing games in amongst illustrations of locally found florals in Leicestershire. The River Soar runs across the top of the panels and athletics track through the centre. Also depicted are the Grand Central Railway, The Bell Foundry, a basketball court, and the Town Hall Market Square. These are all elements which come together to form the identity of Loughborough. The artwork will convey how this town’s rich cultural history is energising future generations.”

The artwork is due to be installed this Summer and will be digitally printed onto vinyl and set inside the walls which will be lit up at night with LED strip lighting.

When asked about how it feels to win the competition, Flo said that:

"I am thrilled to have been chosen for this opportunity. I can give back to the community that I have so enjoyed for the past 4 years in the form of colour and creative imagination. Designing for the competition allowed me to challenge myself and grow my abilities in digital illustration whilst the planning process has been an exciting learning opportunity."

Congratulations to Flo!
