Graduate wins global industrial design award

Megan Lincoln (BA Industrial Design and Technology 2021) has been awarded the Industrial Design (Judge’s Vote) prize in the Global Design Graduate Show 2021 for her project, ‘SONA’.

The awards were open to all art and design students graduating in the year 2020-21 in any related creative discipline, located anywhere in the world. This year more than 5,000 students from over 400art and design universities and colleges worldwide uploaded their end of year projects, making it the biggest ever online showcase of graduating creatives worldwide.

‘SONA’ was Megan’s final year project that she presented at the Design, Creative Arts and Architecture Degree Show 2021. ‘SONA’ is an ultrasound device enabling non-specialist clinicians to carry out a breast ultrasound with AI analysis to provide instant feedback allowing patients to find out their results on the spot.

The device utilises cameras and infrared depth technology generating a bespoke navigation path clinicians can follow, ensuring whatever the patient’s shape or size, clinicians can be confident they have covered all areas. For women opting for non-invasive monitoring of their breast cancer, Sona provides the opportunity to receive treatment from a local facility with the same clinician providing familiarity, continuity of care and a reduction in anxiety through instant results.

In total, Loughborough University had four alumnae who were shortlisted for the awards including three alumnae shortlisted for the Product, Architecture and Interiors award and one alumna shortlisted for the Fine Art, Photography and Craft award.
