The award, presented by the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), is named after Professor John Wilson. Professor Wilson was the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Applied Ergonomics and former president of the IEHF. The IEA/Elsevier John Wilson Award recognizes major contributions in the field of applied ergonomics. The award has been given to Patrick for his significant contribution to ergonomic design and research specifically on innovative theoretical or methodological advancement in the design of complex sociotechnical systems.
Leading academic is awarded the IEA-Elsevier John Wilson Award and appointed Editor-in-Chief of Ergonomics journal
Dr Patrick Waterson, Reader in Human Factors and Complex Systems at Loughborough University has been awarded the third IEA-Elsevier John Wilson Award for 2021, which includes a monetary prize of $5,000.
Speaking of the award, Dr Waterson says:
“I am honoured and humbled to receive the IEA/Elsevier John Wilson Award. John Wilson had a tremendous influence on the field of Human Factors and Ergonomics, and I am very proud of any association with him and his work. I’d like to think that my research carries on a tradition in human factors and sociotechnical systems that was laid down by John and other colleagues in earlier decades. Many thanks to IEA and Elsevier for the award,”
Professor Cees de Bont, Dean of the School of Design and Creative Arts commented that:

Dr Waterson has also recently been appointed the Editor-in-Chief of Ergonomics; a top journal with an international readership aimed at those interested in applying ergonomics and human factors in the design, planning, and management of technical and social systems at work or leisure.
